Just saw this on the Parents Forum and was wondering what options might be peculiar to Pitt and/or Pittsburgh. When we were up for Parents Weekend, they said the kids would get flyers in their mail for local storage firms, but putting it all together was up to the kid. We are 1200 miles away and a three day drive. We were thinking about flying up and renting a van to haul it home, but if anyone knows a reputable storage solution in Pittsburgh, I'd appreciate the info.

I guess because there are so many kids closer than us, this is not a concern for most, but my cousin's kid is in school in Chicago and his school has a service that picks up your boxes at your dorm in May and redelivers them in August. Man, if Pitt had that we could just buy one plane ticket for the kid and be done with it.

Oh well, any ideas? Also, horror stories of what to avoid also appreciated.

mercymom, Being from out of state and talking to other OOSers about this, I consider myself a bit of an expert in this area.

I used Guardian Storage. One of thier locations is right in Oakland, near Pitt. I have no complaints. Friendly staff, clean facilities.

http://www.guardianstorage.com/

A lot of people I knew used Iron City Storage without complaints.

http://www.ironcityselfstorage.com/Centrallylocated.html

I am also familiar with The Lock Up- http://www.thelockup.com/
and Moore Storage- http://www.mooreselfstorage.com/
- people didn't seem to have a problem with them

Those are the ones that I personally know of. Here is Pitt's list of storage facilities:

http://www.pitt.edu/~property/storage.html

That would be nice if Pitt could have that kind of service, but I just don't think they have the room with the urban environment. All the places I listed, however, are reputable (I knew at least one person who used them) and with all of the schools in the area, they are all probably used to helping out college kids

Thanks Pat. Sorry for the confusion, but the school in Chicago (actually, Loyola Chicago) has a service in that there is a company they use and recommend to the students on their website. When I read the website it seemed like Loyola had some kind of deal with the company. It was the only company suggested and they had their own page on the school's website. Kind of like the people Pitt uses for renting the microfridge.

Anyway, thanks for the websites. I know another school in Chicago that stores maybe two boxes per student in the basement of each dorm over the summer, but they have a higher % of oos, so maybe the need is greater. With all the colleges in Pittsburgh, I'm sure these places do have a whole game plan in place. Thanks again!
