Summer Sublet. Maybe at a frat? How does it work.

I am curious about how summer sublets work. I heard that frat houses are good for the summer because it's super cheap and you get to have some people around you. Which frat houses are the better ones to live in? Past experiences? How about living in an apartment?

I am also confused about how much I should be paying for the frats and apts during the summer. Is it easier to negotiate the price when it's closer to summertime?

It can be cheap and you can meet people for sure. Consider your tolerance for living in a fraternity house, though. Are you comfortable with noise, ****ty bathrooms, drinking, smoking, random stuff happening at 3am, broken windows, and not getting your security deposit back?

If so, I (non-sarcastically) recommend Theta Delta Chi. They have some remodeled units on the ground floor in a great location right behind Strada. I forgot what I paid for it, but it was fun for a summer.

Basically, any frat during the summer is dirt ($1100 was what I paid last summer for the whole 3 months). Ask around and find houses which won’t be crowded (which means more quiet), a nice house won’t mean anything if it is packed with rowdy partiers (the house I stayed at last summer only had 4-5 guys at a time living in it).

Strykur did you get a single or double and which house did you live in? Can you recommend some frat houses that are ideal for summer living without all the crazy things ralphs talked about? I want to have fun and party with people around me but I also need to sleep and study. Do guys share a single bathroom on a whole floor?

I had a single at TDX. I actually liked it–I was looking for a somewhat lively atmosphere, the irish people living next door were very nice, the room was huge, I had it all to myself, and the location was sweet (I know I mentioned this but it bears repeating). I never really had a problem sleeping.

I don’t believe a clean fraternity bathroom exists though. At least not for long.

House I stayed last summer is the one owned by Lambda Chi Alpha, single room, recently renovated so it is very nice (bathrooms are excellent). The second floor had 3 bathrooms to 6 rooms. In any frat, almost always a bathroom will be shared (unless a bathroom exists within a room, which sometimes is the case).

I guess one of the main reasons why I want to live in a frat house instead of an apartment is because I don’t want to be lonely. I also heard that some frats serve meals. But I also want a clean and safe space to study and sleep in. Where did you guys usually eat?

Most frats will not have meal plans during the summer. I just had to scrounge on my own (some of my friends who were living in Berkeley for the summer just got meal plans for the campus Dining Commons).

@ OnABudget: “I want to have fun and party with people around me but I also need to sleep and study.”

You should look into Berkeley’s co-ops. You’ll probably be placed into Cloyne, which is a massive house with ~150 people. The co-ops are a very cheap, convenient form of summer living. I’ll be living in Cloyne over the summer. Apparently during summer, quads become doubles and triples become singles :).

Also, you’re pretty much guaranteed to meet people in your major, and/or others that have similar interests to you. Living in Cloyne is definitely a great way to ease into the social life at UCB. Check em out!

If you like what you see in Cloyne, I would go for it! Check out their amenities, rooms, etc. All the co-ops are within 1 or 2 blocks of UCB, so they’re right off of campus.

I spent some time at Chi Psi and enjoyed it. The house is on Durant and Piedmont, right by the international house so that you can get a meal plan at their dining hall. Good guys, volleyball court, bathroom is nice, etc.

A fraternity could be a good option for you. Just look around and see where you like.

About Lambda Chi Alpha, didn’t that frat reestablish this year? They are a christian frat and it is their rule to not party in the house. So it should be a nice place to live in.

I wouldn’t know about LCA’s plans to move back into their own house, all I do know is that it will be available beginning this summer for boarders.
