I know that this isn’t specifically MT related, but I’m sure that some of your kids have some experience with subletting.
How have people handled this, such as renting to a stranger, need for a contract, references? I must admit, I am really nervous about D subleasing her part of an apartment to a complete stranger, who is supposed to be another student at her college. Does the apartment complex get involved or is it just a gentleman’s agreement?
She has her own bedroom and bathroom in a multi bedroom suite and the complex does randomly assign roommates so I suppose she doesn’t necessarily need the ok from her other roommates, but I’m sure it’s best to include them in on the decision someway?
Any information is greatly appreciated.
Be sure to check your lease to see what is required. The landlord may have certain rights. Also, I would absolutely check references and run them by the roommates. My S and his roommates have sublet rooms in their house but only after all the roommates are up to speed. Finally, if it were me, I’d get a sublet agreement from the sublessee so there is no confusion about expectations.
My daughter sublet to a friend last summer and I still required she draw up an agreement. It was via email, but it was something and she had run it by her roommate first.
lol, this thread topic made me laugh, because I am in real estate hell with my daughter (who graduated BFA last May) right now. It IS MT-related, and just another piece of the being-in-this-business headache that you don’t realize ahead of time. :((
@Calliene - we just waded into NYC real estate as well - NOT for the faint of heart!
@toowonderful, well I know of a terrific room for rent.
@Calliene - we are good starting July 1 … the quandary is if an opportunity in June comes through - we will be scrambling, but will have to wait and see
