Do you know of anyone who needs a roommate for an apartment for next year. My D was just informed by her friend that she may not be rooming with my D, because her current roommates might move in together. Needless to say that has really shaken up my D because she did not put her name in the lottery because she thought she had her arrangements made. I am very worried about this as she has a job in Philly this summer and needs to find a place to live. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what she can do?

The housing/roommate situation can often be a source of frustration and consternation as plans evaporate and reform this time of year. I know my daughter went through 3 different incarnations of what her plans were going to be for this year until she arrived at her current arrangements. Like your daughter, last year mine needed to have a place by May as she too intended to remain in Philadelphia. That can limit roommate options since most students do not remain in Phila over the summer and don't want the expense of the summer rent.

Without knowing what your budget is and whether there are other friends your daughter can room with, what I can suggest is that your daughter look for a studio apartment in the vicinity of the UArts campus. Now is the time to be actively looking for May occupancy and there are plenty of studios in the area. While having a roommate is often viewed as preferable, in reality students in the MT program spend so little time in their apartments that it is almost nothing more than a place to study and sleep at night and not having a roommate is not a social detriment. Studios in safe neighborhoods within easy walking distance to the Terra Building and the Arts Bank range from about $650-$1000/month, some including utilities but most with utilities extra, depending on the type of building and the specific location. If you would like more specific info or want to bounce some thoughts around, send me an email or PM.

Michael, changes in housing plans can certainly morph and change many times. I can relate. My own daughter's plans just took a few turns and she is moving at the end of this month, though it turned out well. This can be a yearly "event"! :)

(this will be the first move....of many....we have not helped with physically.....she is renting a truck and paying guy friends.....it involves furniture....flights of stairs.....and it will be a first that my husband is not doing it all as we do a couple of times each year with our two kids!)

Hey bktheater have your D talk to my D. She has a friend from another college that wants to sublet for the summer if you are interested.

hey bktheater, also have your daughter talk to me. i'm not sure what my plans are yet for the summer, but i may be looking for someone to sublet my apt for the summer too...i do bet a lot of her freshman friends haven't figured out housing yet, so i'm sure she can find someone to room with too. but yes, i understand a frustrating process!

Can students retain dorm housing after their freshman year? Why so many looing for apartments?

housing is guaranteed for freshman. there is a lottery system starting sophomore year for the one upper-classmen dorm. so yes, most people live off-campus starting sophomore year.

Thanks to everyone for their great advice. We decided for various reasons to rent a studio for Kate. It is very close to Terra, and she has security in the apartment bldg. It was a good deal, and she is very excited. So we’re happy for her.

My son is now going through this, as well. He had a group of 4 from his studio that were planning on living together; 2 girls and 2 guys. He just found out this past week (after they had already looked at a number of places) that one of the girl’s parents had a problem with the living arrangement. Now the 2 guys are scrambling for new plans. They would like more people to lower the cost. The past 2 weeks he has been so busy with Cider House that he hasn’t had any time to devote to the change in plans. He is starting to feel panicky.

AZKMom, no need to panic. There is a lot of housing to choose from. If arrangements haven’t been made by the first week in May or so, then I would start to be a bit concerned about what will be available in close proximity to the Terra Building or the Arts Bank. Even then, there will still be units available, it’s just that options may be limited. If you would like to PM me with the configuration and price range your son has in mind, I will be glad to share any info I have.

bktheater, glad to hear things worked out. Now you get to deal with the joys of figuring out the logistics of the move . With juries and finals taking up the students’ attention the first 2 weeks of May and everyone needing to be out of the dorms by the middle of May, making the transition to an apartment in May can be a bit hectic!

She actually moved in early, for various reasons, and lives very close to the Terra building. She was worried about the good apts being taken up early, so we moved very quickly. She actually got a dolly (the security guard in her building got one for her from the Merriam Theater) and moved her stuff all by herself along Broad St. She did not have alot, but it took her several trips. I can only visualize it. I wish I had been a fly on the wall watching this, as she certainly did not show this initiative at home in cleaning up her room, LOL. So she’s all moved in, very, very happy and loving having her own space.

My daughter also moved out of the dorm in April (last year) because she was staying in Philadelphia over the summer and wanted to avoid a move as juries hit or in a panic as the dorms closed on the heels of juries and finals. This year is going to be the same as she moves from her current apartment with a roommate to a place of her own - although this time it will be a bit easier since she is staying in the same building. I wish I could have seen your daughter pushing the dolly down the street - what a vision! Last year with mine, I moved both her and her roommate. It took me 4 loads of a van!! It was as if the 2 girls had created a gigantic vacuum in their dorm rooms into which massive amounts of debris and “stuff” had been sucked.

Ha, Ha. I think it’s because they’re girls. My D is also staying in Philly this summer. In fact, she got a job with the “duks” tours company as one of their tour guides, and she’ll be in 2 professional shows at the Pitman Theater company, in High School Musical and All Shook Up. She’s very excited!!! I’m hoping to fly down in August to see her in All Shook Up as she performs 4 weekends in a row from mid July to mid August. Exciting times.

Sounds like she has a great summer lined up. My daughter will be in Pippin this summer and will be working also. When you know the exact dates you will be in Philly, let me know; my wife and I would enjoy meeting you in person.

Absolutely, I’d love to meet you and your wife. My husband will be on call, and so unfortunately won’t be able to come. He would also love to meet you as your great posts about Uarts convinced my D to check out the school and she is LOVING it there. We so thank you for all that you have done. Where is Pippin playing? I’d love to go and see that as well.

I’ve booked my flight and will be in Philly from July 29th - Aug 6th. I will be seeing my D’s show on the Friday night and Saturday night, but am free any other time. It may be too early at the moment to decide when to meet, but closer to the time we’ll keep in touch. I’m very excited to go back!

Pippin is running from June 12 through 27, so it will be before you are in. As your dates approach, get in touch and we will figure out the logistics of meeting up!
