Summer Theatre Tech Internship Ideas

Our area is awash in summer theater camps, but all of the programs are designed for actors/singers/dancers. In a fit of desperation, I spent one morning on the telephone asking if anyone had a summer program for techies. The answers were "No", "We used to, but don't anymore. Why don't you call our tech director for an idea.", "I don't know about that, I'll pass your number on to someone who might know.", "Well our summer theater camp for elementary kids could use a CIT who likes theater tech.", and "Did you say she does lighting?"

Happykid will intern this summer with the tech staff at the acting conservatory that was so delighted to learn she "does lighting". The acting kids pay tuition. Happykid will go for free, and may actually collect a minuscule stipend.

So here is my advice to all the mom's and dad's of techies (and the techies themselves), pick up the phone and keep dialling. And, good luck to all of you!

My S (tech major) did his homework and got offers. Sent his resume to 8 summer programs and got four offers. He is happily working in NY this summer for 13 wks. Long way from New Orleans. He found alot of info at BackstageJobs.com.

Great link noccamtmom! Thanks!

Happykid is still in HS but will be looking for those kinds of opportunities in another couple of years.

Next summer look at opportunities for tech at the Hangar Theatre in Ithaca, NY.
