Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics?

Nate (and others) our daughter really wanted medical studies at ECU (because of the medical school). She got ECU, but did not get medical studies…she got archaeology and ??? (I don’t recall the other course). Neither of the courses are her interest or passion…nor are they related to courses she will likely have next year so she was a bit disappointed.

However, we pointed out to her that this will actually end up being a good thing in that she can learn something new and the goal will solely be to enjoy the process, that is all…not to prepare for next year or for a possible career. It will be good for her to have a class where the goal is just to enjoy learning. Period.

I know that is hard as all of you going are there because you ARE over achieving kids who plan and think about what you are learning. But, know that with engaging teachers and nice kids who also are motivated (and SVSM will have both), you will likely enjoy (to some degree at least!) whatever courses you get…at least that is what we are preaching. Afterall, she is not a fan of the great outdoors and archaeology in the summer heat is hard to sell…but she is starting to accept that it just might be a really good opportunity!

So, I hope you get the courses you want, but if not know that it will still work out just fine! Remember to be proud that you got in…that is no small accomplishment!
Let us know when you get your course assignments…we will celebrate for you either way!

Does anyone know how many classes you are supposed to have at ECU? I got in yesterday (finally taken off the waiting list!) and the lady I spoke to on the phone told me I was signed up for two classes. However, other people I know are signed up for three. Why?

@tdawg: You have the Archaeology class which is more extensive and requires 2 class periods. And congrats!

@nate42 actually I had DNA fingerprinting and alternative programming (which I’m trying to switch out of if possible!). Maybe DNA fingerprinting covers two periods? not sure. And thank you! I’m so excited to be at ECU this summer!

@tdawg: Ahh lucky! I wanted a Medical course so bad! I’m almost positive that DNA fingerprinting will cover 2 class periods. And your welcome! I hope UNCC is great as well!

@tdawg95: I have DNA Fingerprinting too and as Nate said it does take up two classes. My other class is Problem Solving which is a class that I don’t want to be in, but I will deal with. I wanted to take Medical Courses so badly…so I called the people at ECU and they said that most people had signed up for the medical course as their first choice and it was very hard to get into :(

@tdawh: What is alternative programming? Is it learning new/different computer programs? Sorry to sound so ignorant, but I am not a computer person at all. SVSM is mainly math, science and computer stuff…correct?

@Iceindian: I think the medical program only takes a handful of students. My daughter also wanted that program but I believe they just take 10 rising seniors and 6 rising juniors. The DNA class seems like a good second option though.

T

Yes the Medical Program is indeed very selective. It only accepts 10 students. 6 rising senior and 4 rising juniors (I have a friend that did it last year). I am very envious of those of you who have the opportunity to take Genetics courses at ECU. I specified on my application that I wanted those but I was sent to UNCC instead. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled that I have the chance to go to Charlotte but ECU was more desirable.

I really can’t wait to go to Summer Ventures and get away from my town. It gets really old at times. Being with people just as motivated as I will be a very nice change.

@taben1112: This is what I found on the Summer Ventures Website
Alternative Programming - This course introduces students to using uncommon programming languages not likely to be seen in the usual high school curriculum. These uncommon languages are often adapted to special purposes to learn programming concepts. Previous programming experience is neither needed nor required.
Hope this helps!

I attended SVSM at ECU last summer and took Intro to Engineering and Archaeology. Just to clear some things up, Alternative Programming is basically a computer programming course, but if I remember correctly those students also got to design video games and other interesting assignments.

The engineering program was great, although the focus was on mechanical and some civil engineering. Both professors were very helpful and made class interesting. Plus, we built and programmed our own robots for which I eventually won the Catalyst Award.

One note about the course in archaeology though. There was one main professor and then three or four doctorate students working with us. It seemed to me that the group of us in archaeology were just doing their research for them because there we literally had one day of classroom hours on the history of archaeology, and the rest was spent digging holes. Yes, we spent four to five hours a day driving to the site and digging rectangular holes in ten centimeter levels. Aside from the fact that this just seemed like manual labor for archaeology students enrolled at ECU, the doctorate students were all nice and helpful, and the heat wasn’t anything to be worried about as you are digging in the forest.

Good luck to all those accepted!

UNCC - we should be getting the course selection soon right? I’m ready for summer!

@chaeyeong: I have no idea… I haven’t heard anything.

For all the APP people i finally got my email telling me what classes i’ll be in.
Research: Ethical Hacking
Demonstration: Scientific Inquiry.

I’m so excited for Ethical Hacking! I wish I would’ve got Forensic Science for my demonstration class but oh well, i’ll make the best out of scientific inquiry.
I’m sooo excited it’s starting to feel soo real, espescially since I got the class assignment and have turned in all the forms. We’ll be going in about 6 weeks.
Can’t wait to see whoever is going there (:

Lucky! I’m dying with anticipation! Hope you guys love APP. I have been there and it is such a pretty campus! :slight_smile:

thanks i’ve never been but my band teacher graduated from there 4-5 years ago and loved it.
i’m sure you’ll get the class assignment soon. what are the dates for UNCC?

Yepp, it’s an awesome place! I hope so :slight_smile:
And the dates are July 8- August 4. Only giving me 4 days between Summer Ventures and school.

App people: I also got my class selections!
Research: Quantitative Paleobiology
Demonstration: Scientific Inquiry
These were not my top choices, but I am really excited to try out something new!!!

^ Lucky! Us UNCC kids still haven’t heard anything!!!

Turns out I got switched out of Alternative Programming to Physics! (ECU) Does anyone know anything about that class?

@nate42
dang that sucks. we go back to school Aug.27 & i don’t think i can wait that long to go. i’m so excited right now i wish that it would hurry up!!! I hope you find something out soon but they probably don’t have to find out as quick as APP since it starts later.
@mlover15
we have scientific inquiry together. i got ethical hacking which was my first choice for research. i got my second choice for demonstration but its all good, i’m sure it’ll be cool anyways (:
