Haha kinda glad I didn’t apply to NCSSM now, all these SVSM and NCSSM conflicts are chaos. Has anyone gotten their email for what classes they will be taking yet? The letter said “you will be contacted within the next few days.”

I emailed someone in the Director’s Office that I met earlier this year a few months ago and this is what they said:

“If you are accepted to both the SVSM and NCSSM residential program, we ask you to choose which opportunity would best suit you so that we have the resources to serve the most students across the state. This decision was made this application year in light of the difficult economic climate our and many summer programs are facing ahead. I can tell you that, this limitation is NOT extended to those student who are accepted into the NCSSM Online program. In that case, students may participate in SVSM in the summer, then NCSSM online in the fall.”

It kind of sucks for NCSSM residential hopefuls. But I think the experience of NCSSM residential would be more meaningful to many than four weeks during the summer at a university. I’m not trying to play the SVSM attendants down or anything! Lol

That is crazy. I completely believe you, but if that is the case, why is it still on Summer Ventures website that you can do both and why wouldn’t they include that in their letter? They could have written something like, “If you have applied to the residential section of NCSSM, you will have to make the choice between the two programs. Please wait until after selections are announced for NCSSM to return your Summer Ventures decision.”

Also, many students are going to be alternates to NCSSM and eventually get in and some students will appeal their decision. Some may not know until after July of whether they were accepted into NCSSM so how can they make that decision now of which one to attend? That doesn’t make sense in my opinion!

@mich5225: This is just complete unorganization on both NCSSM’s and SVSM’s parts. I hope that the SVSM site directors email/mail the statement that I pasted earlier today in some form or fashion to the SVSM finalists and alternates. I hope that this is solved next year for the now freshmen.

Our daughter’s high school guidance counselor told her that she could not accept an invitation to attend SVSM and NCSSM…it had to be one or the other. But that contradicts what our daughter read and saw online, which indicated that only current NCSSM students could not attend SVSM. I agree with you all that the statement needs to be clearly communicated from all parties to all students and needs to be consistent.

I’ve been reading the posts, and everything seems confusing.

I received a reply today from the SVSM State Coordinator’s Office about attending both SVSM and NCSSM which confirmed what most other people seemed to know already:

“They are correct, the policy is, ‘if accepted to both, NCSSM residential and Summer Ventures, student must choose one’. Unfortunately this was not updated on the web page, however the brochure did have the updated eligibility requirements.”

Unfortunately, we did not even know a brochure existed until someone mentioned it in this thread. All we had to go on was the website, and it doesn’t offer a brochure download.

Question though- what if you are waitlisted to NCSSM- can you attend SVSM? If you learn during SVSM that you were accepted into NCSSM, do you have to go home? Just kidding some with the last question, but it is ridiculous.

NO WHERE on the SVSM acceptance letter does it say this. A lot of people are gonna be mad because this hasn’t been told. What if you don’t learn about this policy until the day before you leave for SVSM? What if you arrive and they tell you that you can’t stay?

I just applied to the online NCSSM program and was accepted into Summer Ventures at East Carolina. Was this policy on the application for residential NCSSM?

@mich5225: No, the policy was not stated on the application for residential NCSSM.

Did you apply to NCSSM? When do we find out- think it is April 16, right?

@neogeezer: The craziest part is that NCSSM administers both programs. It isn’t like it is too separate organizations.

@mich5225: No, wish I could have, but I’m a little old! My daughter applied. At Discovery Day they were very clear that the finalists would be announced on April 16. Non-finalists would be given a chance to file an appeal, and the results of the appeals would be announced April 19. We’ll see.

Thanks for the info. I didn’t have to attend Discovery Day for NCSSM online.

Anyone know where the brochure is at?

@chaeyeong: What brochure?

The updated one - one that neogeezer has mentioned. I was thinking it would be online somehow, but never mind!

@neogeezer: NCSSM statuses are out now. They were way earlier than expected.

Whoever it was on here that wanted a spot at UNCC, you may now take my spot. LOL :D

Brochures are usually sent to the schools in September or October. The guidance counselors usually obtain them. My counselor called me to her office when she first received it.

Great job @evan! I hope NCSSM is great for you!

@evanb1996: That’s what I thought, thanks! and congratz on the NCSSM!

I’d love to take your spot hahaha:)

I got my packet of information today! It container all the forms and other info. What about everybody else?
