Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics?

@quyen820: Yeah, maybe we will have a Medical or Chemistry class together!

Does anyone know what there is to do in Charlotte?

In Charlotte:
Carowinds Amus. Park
Nascar Hall of Fame (and other Museums)
Bobcats and Panthers (though not in summer)
Knights AAA Baseball
National White Water Center (rafting, etc. and jr. olympic training center)
Not much right near (walking) UNCC, but it is a nice enough campus which is clean. They have had some saftey concerns, but no more than most.
Nascar Speedpark is not far at all, nor is Concord Mills (big shopping/movie area)
Three nice lakes, with boating and fishing, are not far (Lake Norman, Mountain Island Lake and Lake Wylie)
They will find fun things for you to do I am sure. Enjoy!

Other than the beach, what is near ECU and what is the campus like?

i got into summer ventures at APP from jul. 1st to the 28th!! anyone else ever been? do you think it is because i am a cross country runner then put me there or were there other factors?
anyone who has done this camp before, care to tell me the typical schedule? is it very intense or is there some free time?
thanks so much
also i’m a rising senior from chapel hill, nc

Nate42: hopefully! I think we might land a medicine class together! I’m glad I already know of somebody that I’ll see there!

@pkhosr45 I also got accepted into App!!! The area (Boone) is really scenic and entertaining. I think the admissions committee just looked for true interest in science and well-roundedness.

@taben1112 ECU has a really nice and relatively compact campus. Security is really good. There are a lot of fast food places in Greenville. However, there is very little to do there. The beach is 1 hr. away, and it is a small city.

quyen820: I hope so! And same here, so far I have met 4 people through twitter and this site that will be at Charlotte. Summer can’t get here soon enough!

@nate42 oh really? I don’t have a twitter but what’s the URL, I’ll check it out if you don’t mind.

I know it’s kinda early to wait for the spaces, but can any of you alternates who gets in post on here, please? T.T

By the way, I am assigned to UNCC haha. My sister goes there, and it’s pretty!

@chaeyeong: I know 2 people declining their invitation to Charlotte.

I think it depends on which program it is…
Did any of them choose earth environmental for their first choice?
and thank you! :)

@chaeyeong: No but I think it was the 2nd choice for one of them.

thank you!!!

@mich5225: I chose…

1 Biology Topics
2 Medicine
3 Chemistry Topics
4 Mathematical Modeling

Earlier in the discussion, I pasted information from the summerventures.org site stating students admitted to both SVSM and NCSSM would be allowed to attend both in the summer before being admitted to NCSSM. Since so many are saying otherwise and probably are more informed than I, I emailed the contact on the summer ventures site for clarification last week. I haven’t received a reply, but in checking the App State SVSM site, I see the following which contradicts the information on the main site:

High school sophomores who are admitted to both Summer Ventures and the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics must choose between attending NCSSM or SVSM.

I am assuming the App State site contains more recent information. These contradictory communications really screw with summer planning.

The best way to find out would be giving the main office a call!

Thanks for the suggestion, but with the advent of email and text messaging, I have neither need nor desire to talk to a stranger on the phone! That question could be answered in less than 10 seconds of an administrator’s time by email, but it would take much longer by phone, especially considering we’d probably end up playing phone tag.

Yes, you are correct. But I have emailed them before and received a respond much quicker! I’m sure they will get back to you soon.

Hey guys! I have been lurking the thread for a few days and I have been watching the nice convo! I was selected to go to UNCC and probably won’t go if accepted into NCSSM. So, whoever it was that was an alternate for Charlotte may take my spot! I hate the new rule, but I have already planned to undertake two summer jobs and a volunteer service gig. Plus, I want to use this summer to kind of just hang out with my friends before I hopefully leave home.

If you all wanted to know what I signed up for, here is the list:

 1. Medicine/Pathology/Physiology
 2. Chemistry
 3. Biology
 4. Advanced Topics in Algebra

I should’ve used my fourth spot for Earth and Environmental Sciences since it is something that was starting to grow on me when I started the application.

Have fun at SVSM you all and I hope you all have a great time!

Thanks @evan ! Good luck with NCSSM, just 7 more days until you know!

I emailed the director for Summer Ventures last fall and she told me that you can apply to NCSSM and attend Summer Ventures the spring before your sophomore year. I wanted to make sure before I applied.

I emailed the NCSSM online program advisor today because my dates for ECU Summer Ventures and the orientation for the NCSSM online program overlap. Obviously, I don’t know if I am in NCSSM, but wanted information. She congratulated me on Summer Ventures and said that we could work around the orientation issue. She didn’t say anything about me having to pick between the two programs.
