Can anyone offer any first hand experience with summer vocal programs for a rising senior? On the wish-list: BUTI, Bel Canto (Florence), Washington National Opera, Oberlin, MPulse (Michigan), Brevard (may have already missed the deline, though). This is for a friend’s daughter, and we are especially concerned about beginning to prepare audition / pre-screening tapes, but perhaps should be aware of other advantages/disadvantages of each program. Also if she hopes to apply to Oberlin and Michigan, does it help to do a summer program there? Any other suggestions? Many thanks in advance
My daughter attended BUTI last year in the Young Artists Vocal Program and it was an amazing experience for her. The deadline has been extended to February 9th so she will have to hurry to get full consideration. Most of the students there were seniors or going into their freshman year at college. There were kids going into Eastman, Juilliard, CCM and others that I can’t remember. I would highly recommend this program. Bel Canto also has an excellent reputation. A friend of daughter went to Brevard last year and was very happy with the vocal program. The audition deadline for the Brevard is Feb. 25th. Good luck!
D did Oberlin and FSU summer voice camps. Got into both for college and is now at Oberlin. Both were great ways to get to know the campus and faculty.
Also, the Oberlin in Italy program is open to HS students. D did that as well and it is a great experience. PM if you need details.
Agree that the Oberlin programs are a great way to get to know faculty and have faculty “recognize” your talents/teachability. D also went to Washington National Opera. Very intense learning program providing a lot of opportunity to grow exponentially. Be prepared to work and be critiqued.
We have to choose between WNO Opera Institute, CCM Voice Workshop, and Oberlin Vocal Academy for the summer… Which program would you recommend?
