Summer Writing Camp

I am considering to send my daughter(rising junior) to Summer Writing Camp.
We need to choose between Kenyon and UVA.
Is there anybody who can give us advice?

Thank you!

My daughter went to Kenyon, and enjoyed it very much. She also went to Iowa, which was perhaps a bit better, but she liked both of them. I’ve heard UVa is good, too, but have no direct knowledge.

If you search in this forum [Summer Programs - College Confidential](Summer Programs - College Confidential Forums) , you’ll find some feedback about those programs. My son attended Kenyon last year and loved it. He went during the session that included the 4th of July and the students went into town to see the parade and fireworks. The students did open mike performances of pieces they wrote, there was a talent show at the end, and everyone submitted something for a bound anthology that they went home with.

Thank you for the replies!
I just wonder if it is worth for the money and look good on the college application.

My son qualified for a scholarship, so I only had to pay a few hundred dollars for the actual program. I would have paid the full amount if I could, just for that experience for him. Writing is his passion. I have no idea how it will look to colleges.

This is for future readers of the thread, not the OP, but if you have a kid interested in writing Sci Fi/Fantasy/Horror, I want to put in a plug for the Alpha Workshop for Young Writers. S attended twice, had a great time and learned a lot. Admission is based solely on a submitted short story.

Can’t tell if your daughter has already applied, but most of the summer programs’ deadlines have come and gone. UVA is still taking apps though.

The Creative Writers’ Workshop and the Duke Young Writers’ Camp are still accepting applications for the summer of 2012.

My S went to the Duke CWW last summer and loved it.

I’ve never seen it mentioned on CC, but Shared Worlds at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC is awesome. My son loved it last year, and he’s giving up a chance to go to Philmont with his Scout troop to go again this year. Here is the website SharedWorlds[/url”>Shared Worlds]SharedWorlds

Thank you everybody!
My daughter decided to go to Kenyon.

Thanks for coming back to tell us the results. She’ll have a wonderful time there.
