Hi guys, so I’m a little nervous about UA, i think its great for the criminal justice program and academics… but i heard it was gehetto and people couldn’t easily get jumped? Can a student PLEASE PLEASE tell me the pros and cons and why its a great school please! IM transfer for fall 2016
Albany is certainly not in the worst area, compared to other university centers. Albany is actually a pretty nice city compared to some isolated and very depressed cities. It benefits from the fact that it is the state capital and so there is incentive to keep it from being like some other upstate NY areas that suffer from entrenched property that would remind anyone of Appalachia during the Great Depression. Albany is downright prosperous compared to these other communities. The architecture of the university is bizarre. But at least it isn’t like a prison, like some. The egg is bizarre too. I guess someone (architect for SUNY Albany: Edward Durell Stone, Egg: Wallace Harrison and Max Abramovitz.) had a good sense of humor when they designed these places. Look, Albany as a city is a whole lot better than others of the university centers. Chin up!
Thanks so much thats definitely helped me a lot. I looked up the town around and it doesn’t seem that bad. Just waiting on a conformation that they received my application!
OP, you may be more comfortable attending a college with a gated campus.
Albany as a whole is a great city, especially for young professionals. Yeah, there are a few neighborhoods that aren’t nice, mainly down by the port and Arbor Hill. But near the capital is very nice, has lots of hotels and restaurants and bars and is really gentrified. Near the University is actually a good area and very suburban. As with any major city, just don’t go out places alone at night. Most Upstate NY cities (Bufflao, Rochester, Utica) pale in comparison to Albany.
You likely wont get jumped unless youre out late at night, in the city, off the campus, being an asshole or something
