Best SUNY

What's considered the best SUNY school? I want to major in history and do a pre law program.

I’m a history student at SUNY New Paltz. I think the department here in fantastic. If you have any specific questions about the department or school, please let me know.

I personally don’t value rankings all that much, but schools such as Binghamton, Buffalo, Stony Brook, New Paltz, Geneseo, and Oneonta are generally well-regarded.

Here are a few things to consider: Do you want to stay in a particular area of the state? Do you prefer smaller classes or large lectures? Are you comfortable being taught by a TA potentially? Do you see yourself attending a school with 30,000 students? What sort of campus culture fits your personality the best? Also, have you visited any schools yet? Think about what you liked and disliked about those visits in a general sense.

Considering the above may help you narrow down your search a bit. I think many SUNY schools offer wonderful history majors. I imagine for law school you will want to create close relationships with at least 3 professors for letters of recommendation. This can be done at most SUNY schools in my opinion.

The best LAC out of the SUNY’s is Geneseo by far. I would add Geneseo to the top of your list.

Binghamton and Geneseo are generally considered the top. Binghamton as a research university, Geneseo as a LAC. I can’t speak for Geneseo but Binghamton has a really good pre-law program.

The pre-law program at Geneseo is good. Gene grads continue to get accepted to top law schools.

For sciences, Stony Brook is much better than Binghamton.

Binghamton is fantastic for pre-law and I love the history department here… Dunno about rankings, but I find the professors to be excellent.

Binghamtom, UB, Geneseo. Generally Regarded as the best 3. Stony Brook is right there after those. (or ahead of them in certain fields/regards)

Hands down Binghamton U

Hands down GENESEO :)

None of the SUNY’s comes close to Stony Brook. Stony Brook is on a whole different level when it comes to sciences. I mean all one has to think about is Stony Brook’s Brookhaven National Lab, CEWIT, and top notch Science programs. It’s almost an insult to put Geneseo on the same sentence as Stony Brook, when we are talking about sciences.

It’s almost a known fact, and Gov.Cuomo has been hinting at this, that the flagship of SUNY is Stony Brook. I mean, when it comes to Sciences, Binghamton is no where close.

Lets talk facts, and keep emotions out of it. In terms of Science, and research, Stony Brook not only has a higher budget and, far, far more resources, but it’s faculty members are far more established, along with its alumni.

Here is a quick example, the president of Stanford is a Stony Brook Computer Science Ph.D. Again, before you even think of saying Binghamton is just as strong, look up Brookhaven National Lab(only 4 in the entire nation), CEWIT, Cold Spring Harbors Lab, and SBU’s research budget. It dwarfs other SUNY’s, not to mention Jim Simons recent historical gift(what was it, $150 million).

With the new $100 Million Computer Science building coming soon, no doubt Stony Brook will be top 20 soon(it’s already top 20 in CS by some sources).

^ Nice try, Stony Brook representative…

“none of the SUNYs come close to Stonybrook”…are you kidding?..Stonybrook is a good school but for UNDERGRADUATE education there are better options i.e. Geneseo and Binghamton.

Lets talk facts, and not get emotional. Name a SUNY that does more research, or that has a stronger SCIENCE program. I think just about every Binghamton student knows that when it comes to Science, or reserach, there is no comparison.

Just educating the public, look up Brookhaven National Lab, CEWIT, etc. In Computer Science alone, Bing and Geneseo combined is not on the same tier as Stony Brook. We have won it, and just ranked second. Often times, Bing is no where to be seen.

Don’t be offended, EVERYBODY knows that when it comes to Science, or research budget(overall), thanks to people like Charles Wang and Jim Simons(he gave us the highest gift ever), most SUNY’s are dwarfed.

I mean both of you, ask yourself honestly, is ANY SUNY as good as Stony Brook when it comes to Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, and research in general. Before you respond, look up BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LAB(only 4 in the US).

The title of this Thread is “Best SUNY” not Best Research University. Again, Stonybrook is a good school and is cash rich with research but the inital question raised above was regarding undergraduate history and pre-law programs. If $$$ alone raised a college/university’s academic profile then Stonybrook should be much further along shouldn’t it be? When considering academic quality or “best” school I would look at student retention rates, 4 year graduation rates, incomming student profiles, % of students going on to graduate school, average debt at graduation, student satisfaction and so on…Based on the stats and college rankings I have reviewed Geneseo and Binghamton are always ahead of Stonybrook.

You might also be surprised that an AIP study showed Geneseo actually graduating more undergraduate physics majors than Stonybrook. [Education and Employment Data - American Institute of Physics](Statistical Research Center | American Institute of Physics)

Regardless, there is alot of money at Stonybrook for research and the relationship with Brookhaven Lab is wonderful. Yes, Charles Wang has donated millons to Stonybrook. All of this being considered I wouldn’t necessarily say that for Undergraduate education Stonybrook outshines some of the other SUNY schools including Geneseo and Binghamton.

SUNY admissions profile by campus, for 4-year schools:
https://www.suny.edu/student/downloads/Pdf/2013_Admissions_qf_stateop.pdf

When it comes to science, we should not kid, or attempt to deceive ourselves. Stony Brook just admitted it’s best incoming class of freshmen ever(the best of all SUNY’s), Stony Brook’s Physics, program, nuclear Physics in particular is the 4th best in the USA. Geometry is the 8th best, Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, Computer Science, is on a completely different tier. I hate to say this, but when it comes to the aforementioned fields, especially Computer Science and Physics, we rival Ivy-leagues. Aside from graduating outstanding alumni(think the president of Stanford who is a CS Ph.D), and many others.

If ‘Best’ implies the best STEM school, then comparing Stony Brook to Geneseo, politely speaking, is an insult to humanity. Don’t get me wrong, Geneseo might be great for literature, history, but when it comes to SCIENCE, Schools like Binghamton, and others know Stony Brook is the cream of the crop.

With all these recent hundreds of millions of dollars in gift, the school plans on hiring MORE Noble prize winners, and better scientists. Aside from being the home of the MRI, Stony Brook plans on expanding in Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and other hard sciences.

I concur that Geneseo, and other LAC’s might not have students dropping out at the same rate at Stony Brook, but that has to do with Stony Brook’s focus. Stony Brook focuses on Science, and unfortunately most can’t handle it. So pardon me if it takes Stony Brook longer than Bing or Geneseo to graduate Engineers, and Nuclear Physicists.

Stony is a Science school, and a school that according to WSJ is ranked 8th in the US for sending students to elite graduate programs. When your focus is science and undergraduate research(Stony is notorious for permitting students to conduct undergrad research). Like I said, only 4 schools in the US are honored to have a national lab, and SUNY should feel amazed knowing that Stony Brook manages a national lab, and CEWIT.

Stay tuned for our new $100 million CS building guys. Our rankings should be sky-rocketting, we already jumped 17 positions, to 92nd in the US.

ಠ_ಠ

Just out of curiosity, why are you defending SB so ardently? I’ve never seen someone so worked up about this who wasn’t an admissions rep or a tour guide or like, the dean of the school.

It’s not like we’re trying to argue that some random community college from Idaho is better than Harvard. No matter which of the three you prefer, it’s pretty undeniable that Binghamton, SB, and Geneseo are all around the same level. If one is slightly better than the other, it’s really not by a large margin and arguments could easily be made for all three. Everybody here is concurring that SB is a very good school. Why is it so necessary to zealously insist that it is THE best by FAR? Maybe because it’s 1am and I’m tired but I’m honestly just confused by your level of commitment to this.

I think the number 2 thread is the best answer,

I’m just going to note that Brookhaven has some partnerships with SB, but it’s not as though it’s SB’s lab alone. But in any case, SB isn’t a very strong school OVERALL and it’s not the ideal place for HISTORY. If I’d been pre-med, I would have accepted SB’s offer and gone there, but since I wasn’t Binghamton is a far better place for me.

Nothing against SB. I wanted to go there for a long time before I decided pre-med wasn’t for me.
