Within NYS, there is a stigma associated with them even though SUNY Geneseo, Binghamton, Buffalo, and Stony Brook have respectable selectivity. Are any of them known at all outside of NYS? Are any of them respected?

Pretty much unknown outside of NYS, even in New England. I believe that some CUNY schools (Baruch, John Jay, Hunter) are the best known and respected.

There’s not much of a stigma towards CUNY/SUNY here. While I would rather attend my privates than Purchase (the lone state school that I applied to), most other people didn’t even bother applying to privates. The majority of the students here applied to the local CC + Stony Brook/Binghamton/Albany/Geneseo/New Paltz/etc.

I think almost all students go to SUNY or CUNY for financial reasons, not becaues they believe they are great schools. Within NYS, I think Geneseo has a bit of a good reputation. SUNY does not have a flagship school.

I think that SUNY-Stony Brook and Binghamton are the most well known. Stony Brook is the most nationally visible one because it has a very good medical school and well regarded graduate programs.

Sorry to say this, but no one knows about them. For he first 3 months I was on CC I was like “what the f*** is SUNY?” untill someone mentioned what it actually was in a post…

SUNY has no “flagship” campus. Every campus is supposed to be the same, which is not true. The better campuses like Stony Brook and Binghamton are dragged down by this notion. Also, no big time athletics, that is why so few people know about SUNY/CUNY outside of NYS.

^True. If you want the “public flagship” experience in NYS, you have to go to Syracuse U (which, of course, is private). Syracuse is roughly similar to Ohio State or Minnesota.

stony brook might get some recognition because of the scientific research, but I can assure you that the non-science programs are awful. Also it’s very easy to get in.

I think of the SUNYs like I think of the Cal States (CSUs). No flagship, but some CSUs are better than others. Of course, Calif also has the UC system with Berkeley as the flagship with arguably UCLA as a co-flagship.

The no big sports at SUNYs is a curious thing since, of course, NYers do love sports. So, why is that? The Calif schools have big sports at some UCs and some CSUs.

SUNYs are simply not very good and are known for that in and out of NY. It’s basically Binghamton and Buffalo as two pretty decent schools, + Albany for nano and a few other fields, + Stonybrook for sciences (but pretty much only grad level), + Geneseo for someone who wants a more LAC feel at public price.

Even then, kids from top schools in NY who are simply pretty good students in regular classes can get into all but Bing and Geneseo. There is little motivation for the top students to stay and actually enroll. The locations are considered undesirable as is the size of many of the better schools.

My sister has done very well and got a great education at Buffalo, but even then, her work at one of the top SUNYs as a senior with a near perfect GPA pales in comparison to the expectations of most top 50 schools. My friends in SUNYs who got the best education are the Buffalo engineers, by far.

What the SUNY system has is a wonderful setup to take on the task of providing a strong education to kids in the middle 80%. That’s not going to build prestige or reputation. I think it’s one of the best state systems because it is ostensibly well suited for public education. It’s a flagship to draw in some of those top 20% kids short of being the best system, but no school right now is going to draw from afar and it probably shouldn’t.

How do the California and New York public schools stack up in terms of selectivity?

i’m attending oswego this fall and one of the main reasons why i chose it was because it’s in-state. i’m going into education and i would like to teach in ny state, so that was a real deal breaker for me. it would be pointless for me to spend 25-40 thousand a year on a license i could get for 16 thousand a year. besides, all the money i’m saving now i could use towards grad school several years down the road :)

It hurts the SUNYs reputations that most of them are in towns that nobody has heard of and/or are strange to pronounce. Everybody knows where Albany and Buffalo are. New Paltz, Geneseo, Oswego, Purchase, Fredonia, Stony Brook, and Oneonta all sound like fictional places in children’s books or 3 Stooges movies. In fact I think Curly was once crowned Emperor of Fredonia.

Modestmelody-
You don’t sound very modest to me!!

There are many quite intelligent students at SUNY’s. Some pick for cost, others location, and some for program. Name recognition can be important, however, it is foolish to believe you can not get a quality education at many state schools (SUNY’s and other states).

My friends son is a freshman at Michigan, majoring in Business. He was rejected from Binghamton. Each program has it’s own standards for admittance.
