-equestrian for 8 consecutive years, 9 1/2 years total; I compete individually and on a team
-on an Interscholastic Equestrian Association team. This year i went to Nationals and was ranked 8th in the nation for my division, and amassed more points than any other team member. I have done this for two going on three years, and it is about 5 hours a week with the team from August through May, with 12-hours show days 5-8 times a year.
-approx. 400 hours as CIT at horse camp, I was one of the counselors with more responsibility and so often taught anatomy and horsemanship lessons and supervised groups of 10-20 kids, and made morning plans for the other CITs (volunteer)
-about 100 hours of random barn work, from assisting lessons to breaking ice and watering the horses in ten degree weather (volunteer)
-volunteered time giving pony rides at birthday parties and festivals, approx. 40 hours
-I volunteer for the local SPCA; I do marketing and may have published writing in the newspaper by fall
-volunteered for the local nature museum assisting with maple sugaring tours, as well as their annual Earth Day festivals
-I do paid work each summer for a local pet-sitting business, including walking, feeding, grooming, etc.
-I started a project horse in the fall that had zero hunt seat experience, and put in approximately 3 hours each day after school to train her, more on the weekends. I was able to balance a demanding junior year schedule while training a mare that I was able to successfully show come spring and summer, and do very well.
-I also exercise a handful of horses for the barn owners on occasion because they haven't the time
-I volunteer with the local acupuncture office
-I volunteered time with therapeutic riding lessons for 2.5 years, a total of about 10 hours a week, 44 weeks out of the year
-this summer I am interning with a geneticist at a nearby hospital
-for NHS, I have assisted with senior graduation, and will soon be doing car-washes and orientation for the freshmen, atop numerous other activities
-I hope to join the environmental club at school next year, but I have not yet done so
-for fun, I also raise Light Brahma layer hens, and experiment with botany a bit, growing and grafting cacti and such

GPA, test scores...

my unweighted GPA is a 94 (3.9), my weighted GPA is a 97 (not sure of it on a 5.0 scale)
I have only taken the SAT and ACT once each; I scored poorly on the SAT with an 1890, and well-enough on the ACT with a 30; I had no preparation for the ACT, I went in blind, so I plan to study further for both tests and re-take to score higher. I would love to land in the 32-33 range (will probably submit ACT only)

I am in the top 7% of my class.
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: female

Other...

I live in New York, in the Hudson Valley, and would like to stay within 5-6 hours of home. I qualify for the NYS STEM Scholarship, and wish to go into a field such as genetics/biochemistry/molecular bio. Thanks again everyone!

I’d say Binghamton and Geneseo are both good matches for you!

Bighamton and Geneseo are safeties for you! Good luck girl!
Chance me back?

thank you @Ranza123‌ and @LetterPurple‌ !!!

Anyone else know of any other match/reach schools I should apply to??

You horseback ride? Nice!

To suggest other schools, I’d need to know a little more about what you like in a school, in academics, in location, how much you can afford, etc. Are there any other schools you have been looking at and like/dislike?

Without knowing all that, here’s a spattering of various colleges you may or may not want to look into: Vassar, Brandeis, Smith, Williams, Tufts, Northeastern, Colby, Wellesley, University of Rochester, Hamilton, Boston College, Bowdoin, Middlebury

@LetterPurple‌ yes! It’s pretty awesome  do you? I also noticed you’d like me to chance you back…I’m afraid I’m not very familiar with the schools you’re looking into, I can give it a shot though if you’re interested?

@Ranza123‌ I would need a school that is definitely strong in the sciences, a small to moderately sized student body (not too large) in a rural or small/large town setting. The city just isn’t a place that would work for me…I cannot afford to spend 200k on an undergrad eduction, but we will consider private schools if they are a really good fit or offer scholarships of some sort. I’m sorry, I cannot give an exact budget at the moment. We are headed upstate tomorrow to check out Geneseo, Binghamton, and cornell CALS, and skidmore at a later date. Thanks for offering to help further!

Let me know what you think of the upstate area! I have lived in Ithaca (Cornell) all my life so if you have any questions about the area/atmosphere etc. please feel free to ask!

I will! You’re lucky, I’ve always loved upstate NY! It’s gorgeous, especially the Ithaca area…I assume there’s countless hiking opportunities and numerous other outdoor activities to take part in? Is Ithaca generally a very active town? @Ranza123‌

Oh yeah there are tons of outdoor activities and opportunities. The trails are gorgeous, there are multiple state parks, there are gorges and lakes and basically everything you could want in a location. I’ve always found that there was a lot to do in ithaca. I actually live about ten minutes from the downtown area, and where I live and went to high school is basically the middle of nowhere and farmland and all that. So ithaca is where people would always go to work and hang out. So I personally think there’s a lot to do. People from large cities would probably disagree.

Sounds great!! Yeah I could never do a city even just because of lack of open space alone haha…did you attend college in ithaca as well? @Ranza123‌

I’m starting college at Cornell (arts and sciences) next week!

That’s awesome!! I wish you the best of luck  what direction are you aiming for major-wise?? Also, do you happen to know anything about the average ACT scores for CALS students?? It’s a long shot but maybe you’ve talked to some others that will be attending the university? @Ranza123‌

I’m undeclared as far as my major goes.

The mid-50% of ACT for the entire university is 30-34. They don’t break it up by colleges. My best friend will be attending CALS and she got a 32 both times she took the ACT and I believe her superscored ACT was a 33. Obviously that is just one individual scenario. I took the ACT once and scored a 34. I would say just aim to score as high as you possibly can.

Oohh I see…makes sense. We are actually a bit less than an hour from Ithaca now. Thanks for all the help!! @Ranza123‌

Let me know what you think of ithaca! If you’re still roaming around collegetown, stop into Jason’s Grocery before 9 and I can give you some face-to-face advice haha!

So far it seems like a neat town, DEFINITELY much more going on than in Geneseo! As in there’s more than one street haha. May consider it, I’ll let you know if I’m planning on stopping by! @Ranza123‌
