Hi,
I have been admitted to both schools. I am a New York resident and will get instate tuition, but I also received a 20k presidential scholarship to GW. I am a political science major and I was wondering if GW is worth the extra tuition as I want to go onto attend law school or if binghamton will give me just the same education and reputation. Also, Obviously GW is in a city and has more to do but would you consider the city of binghamton really boring? Anything to help me decide would be much appreciated!! Which would you chose?

You didn’t specify your EFC for GW - are you/your parents able to comfortably handle the rest, and cover law school afterwards? My vote would be for SUNY - get top grades, good LORs, do well on the LSAT, and you’ll be able to afford law school better. A friend’s daughter transferred to Binghamton from U Vermont and was very happy there, but of course it’s a personal decision. I would try to head up there and visit while you can.

@darwinknew my parents can comfortably afford GW especially with the scholarship. However, I would be on my own with law school and take out loans. If I went to binghamton they would pay for law school as well.

As the parent of a SUNY Binghamton student, I am a little biased but I feel he’s getting a top notch education there and would vote for it. Look at the financials and the overall impact loans will have once you graduate. My wife and I both graduated with heavy grad school loans and it impacts everything from buying a house to financial planning to every aspect of life. If you can graduate law school (which seems far off now) with no loans, you will be that much further (?farther) ahead in life…
Food for thought…

If your parents can comfortably afford GWU, then go there (unless you prefer Binghamton). The resources, opportunities (both from the school itself and from its location), and academic level for your chosen field are among the best in the country and just can’t compare to Bing, even if Bing is a great school.
(wrt location, I am not speaking in terms of “boring” vs fun, but in terms of professional opportunities: think two seconds: political science/binghamton… political science/DC. What internships do you think you can have in political science in Binghamton? And in DC?)

If the price was the same, I’d say GW for its location, particularly for a poly sci major. But given the price differential, I’d go to SUNY-B and get the law school paid for by your parents. If you haven’t been to Binghamton yet, I would suggest visiting first though.

OP has said that if OP goes to GWU, OP ends up paying for law school. if Binghamton, OP doesn’t pay for law school. This is a no-brainer. As much as I like GWU’s location, it’s not worth the money.
