SUNY Buffalo or UMass Amherst- Which one should I go for?

So, I’m an international student and I had already decided to attend SUNY buffalo and chose BME as my major, but I recently recieved an acceptance from UMass. I was offered $8.5k/year scholarship from the former and $12k from the latter, so the cost of attendance is almost the same. However, I can’t help but think that I should choose UMass instead because it’s higher in terms of ranking and I think I like Amherst (the weather and all) a little better. I don’t care about the enrollment fee as long as I choose the better one. Here are the things that I want to keep under consideration:

  1. Which one is better for my major? What if I want to change my major(as long as I’m in the Engineering department)?
  2. Which one has better job and internship opportunities(If I want to find myself an on-campus job or an internship)?
  3. Which one will be cheaper? (The cities, off-campus accomodation etc etc)
  4. Which one is more liberal?

Which one should I choose? Am I worrying way too much? I’d love to hear what anyone has to say.

I have 2 friends who each have D’s. Both applied to the 2 schools you are considering in the same year. One went to UBuff and the other to UMass; each choice was made for financial reasons. Both enjoyed their experiences and graduated several years ago. Each is now working in the counseling field - one as a school guidance counselor and the other as a college career counselor.

Both had jobs at college - the UBuff student worked in an academic department as an assistant and the other girl also had a job but I don’t remember what it was.

Good luck.

I would recommend UBuffalo. Both are solid universities, especially for engineering. Buffalo will be significantly cheaper.

@LBad96 -

UBuff might not be significantly cheaper depending on FA and scholarship. That’s what was so odd about the 2 girls I described above. Both were middle class white girls and one got more money for UBuff and the other got more for UMass. Ironically, the mom of the one who wound up at UBuff is from Mass originally.
