SUNY Diversity

Where do minority students choose to go among the various public colleges and universities in the SUNY system?

African-American students seem to prefer Buffalo State and the University of Albany. New Paltz is perhaps the school of choice for Hispanic students. And Asian students are most interested in Binghamton University and, to a lesser degree, the University of Buffalo. Anecdotally, Stony Brook is the most popular SUNY choice for Asian-American students, but they don't post their Common Data Set online so I can't confirm that.

Here's what I do have from ten SUNY web-sites:

Binghamton University (Black- 5%, Asian- 13%, Hispanic- 7%, Total- 25%)
University at Albany (Black- 9%, Asian- 6%, Hispanic- 7%, Total- 22%)
University at Buffalo (Black- 7%, Asian- 9%, Hispanic- 4%, Total- 20%)

Buffalo State College (Black- 14%, Asian- 2%, Hispanic- 4%, Total- 20%)
New Paltz (Black- 6%, Asian- 3%, Hispanic- 10%, Total- 19%)
Geneseo (Black- 2%, Asian- 6%, Hispanic- 4%, Total- 12%)
Cortland (Black- 3%, Asian- 2%, Hispanic- 5%, Total- 10%)
Oswego (Black- 4%, Asian- 2%, Hispanic- 4%, Total- 10%)
Brockport (Black- 6%, Asian- 1%, Hispanic- 3%, Total- 10%)
Fredonia (Black- 3%, Asian- 2%, Hispanic- 3%, Total- 8%)

Incidentally, the minority percentage of the statewide population is: African-American- 16%, Asian- 6%, Hispanic 13%, Total- 35%.

As has been stated frequently on this board, and as stats bear out, students of color are more likely to choose universities or schools in or near big cities than they are smaller colleges in smaller Upstate towns. Unfortunately, so many of NYS's schools are in small Upstate towns. Fortunately, NYS is also blessed with the CUNY system.

The College Board’s statistics put Stony Brook at 5% Black (Non-Hispanic), 26% Asian/Pacific Islander, and 8% Hispanic.
