Can someone please describe the diversity within Plattsburgh,Potsdam, and Fredonia?

I’ve applied to all three of these schools and honestly I’m kind of scared. I’ve never left home before, and my mom’s forcing me to go to these schools. I’ve always lived in a REALLY DIVERSE environment with people of all ethnic backgrounds, and not not to be rude but all three of these colleges have mostly white students. Are the students okay? Are some discriminatory? I happen to be black, and also bisexual, so I’d like to know how the lgbt is over at these schools as well? Please and thank you.

I can’t speak about all of those schools, but my daughter is a sophomore at SUNY Potsdam. I can tell you that there are plenty of black students on campus. I was actually surprised to read what you said about the college having mostly white students. That is not what you see when you walk around campus. You would not feel out of place at all.

They also seem to be pretty accepting of the lgbt community. My daughter is straight, but is living on a gender neutral floor because she wanted to live in a particular dorm. There are transgender students, gay students, whatever … on her floor and everybody seems completely accepting. She also went to some sort of lgbt club meeting (as an assignment for a class - had to go to a different club and a friend of hers belonged to that one) and said that it was pretty active and the people were great.

So I don’t think you would have any trouble at Potsdam. Good luck!!

There is some diversity at those schools. Potsdam has a notable LGBT population. But the surrounding areas are very rural and not at all diverse for all of them. I know albany and buffalo are very diverse as well and they are both in suburban areas so it’s better if you don’t want to deal with hostile townies. I went to binghamton and while it is diverse, there is a lot of self segregation. So it’s fine if you are looking for people from your race but less fine if you want to make friends from other races.

Have you considered Purchase? It has a large LGBT population and students there are diverse and open minded.
