SUNY ESF and Syracuse

I’m a junior right now, living in Syracuse. I want to major in enviornmental science and was thinking of SUNY ESF, since it falls under the Say Yes program. The only thing is, I wanted to minor at SU. Does anyone know how well SU and ESF students get along? I’ve talked to a few SU students and they’ve said that they don’t really like each other much. Besides that:

  1. How well of a school is SUNY ESF really? Not many people seem to have considered it or even know about it outside of New York.
  2. Are there any better options? They don't have to be under the Say Yes, I just want to take everything into consideration.

My best friend goes to Suny ESF and loves it there and I considered going there. Yes, it’s is not very well known (even in New York), but because the school is so unique and has a very specific focus, it is a great choice if u want to major in something environmental. There is no doubt that u can find a job after college if that is what you want to do. It’s also much cheaper that Syracuse, so I think that it is definitely a better choice, if helping the environment is your calling.

And syracuse and esf students definitely interact. My friend is always going to syracuse games and going to parties at syracuse and what not. He likes it because I get the feel of a big campus, as well as a small one. I’m not too familiar with the “say yes”, but suny buffalo is a great choice if u wanted to focus on something environmental. Same with vermont and UNH. So u can look into those schools.

If you really want to go into something environmental (or somewhere in that field) SUNY ESF is a great choice. Don’t let its hidden nature dissuade you from wanting to go. The reason it’s not as well known is because it’s a small state school in NY (let’s face it, I feel like there are thousands of SUNY’s) with a special focus. To the outsider looking in, it’s SUNY and CUNY and they don’t care what goes after it. But that shouldn’t affect YOUR decision.

Syracuse is good if you want to have a broader spectrum of options and classes.

Don’t let what a few students say about a little rivalry rile you up too much.

Thanks! Do you think it’ll matter much in terms of getting a job? Would SUNY ESF be written of as some random, small name school and hurt my chances of anything? I know it’s not Cornell, but would it still be considered “good,” I guess?

No. Not in in the environmental field at least. ESF is probably one of the best environmental schools in the country (and it’s cheap). If u know that that is what u want to do, u can’t go wrong.

SUNY ESF is considered good and will not hurt your chances. Cornell is a reach for everyone.

It’s not the school that forms the quality of the student. You form your own quality and chances. Sure, in bigger schools you have more opportunities, but SUNY ESF will provide you with ample chances and opportunities.

In that field, ESF is extremely prestigious.
