SUNY Geneseo

What are my chances as transfer with these stats:

I'll be transfering in as a junior psych/eng (CW focus) major

Freshmen Year (Hofstra University)
-3.89 (if I do well on my finals)
-In a musical my first semester

Sophmore Year (Community College, financial reasons)
-Hoping to keep up at least a 3.7, but a 4.0 would be nice
-Going to try joining some type of newspaper/magazine club
-Maybe another club that sparks my interest (we'll see)

Highschool (although I've been told it doesn't matter after 2 college years)
-87 unweighted (unweighted GPA around 3.4ish), forget weighted
-1180 SATs (PSATs said I'd get near 1300, lol, no studying and then maybe just a bad day screwed me over, should really care enough to take 'em again)
-Have some ECs and 25 hours CS too, if that even matters...

What are my chances?

Bump.......

I think you have a really good chance. My friend was just accepted as a transfer to Geneseo with stats very similar to yours (maybe even lower) from Onondaga Community College. Plus he applied during his freshmen year, meaning they based their decision on pretty much 1 semester of college work and HS. I believe his college GPA was between 3.7-3.8. Hope that helped

Thanks, that defiently is helpful. I'll hopefully be keeping my GPA above 3.8 and it won't even be based on my HS stats (I'm assuming your friends were under 3.7-8?). So, I'll just work my ass off to get the best chance I can.

Any other opinions on my chances would be appreciated, and anything I could do to increase chances (other than the obvious of keeping a high GPA) are welcome too.

More opinions still wanted...

CollegeKid, what community college are you going to jump to next year? Just curious. See if you can keep yourself closer to that 4.0 than to the 3.7 and it'd certainly help if you hone in on one or two specific ECs of interest and just get really involved with them. Don't worry about your SAT -- if you apply as someone who's consistently proved he can handle the demands of college coursework, I am sure you will be fine. I don't know anything about Geneseo's selectivity offhand, although, from their website:

"Most successful admission candidates present a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher."

I'm sure you may have seen this already, but if you can blow past that suggested number of 3.0, I'm sure you won't have a problem getting in. Just make sure you're backed by the standard trio of strong essays, ECs, and recs.

Thanks

I'm going to Westchester Community College (it's in NY). I'm not sure how Community Colleges rank and how WCC does in particular, but it's my only option because it's where I live.

Yea, I definetly will try to keep my GPA close to 4.0, just gotta work my ass off. I really like getting to know my teachers (it actually kind of upset me this semester when one teacher just passed out an attendance sheet, although I made it a point to get to know him, he was a great teacher), so hopefully I can do that at WCC and get a good recommendation. Also, is it possible to get recommendations from teachers at Hofstra? I have two teachers that I know would give me great recommendations (English and Philosophy), but not sure if it'd be good to get recs from them or from WCC teachers.

Anyway, I'll just try my best, join a club or 2 (definitely magazine /newspaper type thing), get good recs, and write a good essay.

I can't do anything other than that, except cross my fingers...

I'm sure you can still get recs from Hofstra professors. Many of my transfer applications had recs from professors at both colleges I've attended (Iona -- which you may know of being from Westchester -- and Nassau CC). Good luck!
