hello, i need to decide between these two colleges to apply to asap, as i have to send in my transcript request form.

I am a very liberal african american female who is in love with the location and campus of fordham, but the free thinking and quirky nature about New Paltz.

Cons of each:
New Paltz: male/female ratio ( what is it exactly?)
Fordham: rigid cirriculum, potential lack of diversity/liberal students

New Paltz is far cheaper, a standard B state school quite a shlep from the city. Fordham is expensive, known for its arts and theology/philosophy programs. Fordham would most likely be more diverse because it’s in nyc. New Paltz is not diverse at all, unless you consider having kids from both westchester and nassau county diversity.

I was thinking more about geographic diversity. But you’re right, I guess the public school would be a little more racially and economically diverse. Fordham is generally considered the better school and if you like the location and can afford it I would say apply there. Even if it is little more preppy I don’t think you will feel out of place at all at Fordham.

New Paltz female male ratio gap has been closing the last 2 years as the applicant pool is much larger. I know they have been working to make it more equal. It is also very diverse economically, raciallyand internationally. While many students come from the NY area, there are also a good number of international students.
My son is a New Pltz transfer student. Transferred from private school. His housemate last semester was a transfer from Fordham. Don’t know much about Fordham except that his housemate seemed happy with his transfer to NP.

These are both great schools! Personally, I looked at Suny New Paltz recently as an in-state, financially feasible school and loved it! Although it is closer 2/3 female, I think more and more schools these days are significantly more female, and I’ve also heard that the gap is closing. I loved the town, and I think it has a really quirky, fun vibe that seems great if you’re into that. But Fordham is a great school too. I think you have two great options, and if you can’t apply to both you should just weigh location and the strength of the academics you are hoping to pursue. Good Luck!
