SUNY New Paltz

I sent in my application about a month ago, and when I checked my admissions status, it says that a decision has been made & I will receive an answer within the next 14 days. I've been frantically checking the mail everyday, but alas, I have not received anything yet. I was wondering if anyone could give me any idea if I even have a remote chance of getting in.

HS Average: 83.5
ACT: 21
Extra Curricular Activities: Yearbook editor for three years, marching band, concert band (held leadership position in marching band and concert band), Community service club.

I know that New Paltz has a strong emphasis on the essay, and I really worked hard to make sure that my essay was as strong as it could possibly be. Basically, because of some medical issues, my grades were not good during freshmen and sophomore years, but I was able to change things around during junior year and really got my grades up.

Also, I have four very strong recommendations from teachers that have seen me through all of the things that I have gone through, and I was able to excel in their classes even though I was going through a very hard time.

I knew going into this that New Paltz was most certainly a reach, and I am just not sure what to expect. I mean, people get into their reach schools all the time. Even if I don't get accepted first time around, I would be perfectly happy with being deferred (I managed to pull off a 3.8 gpa this marking period, took me long enough).

Sorry, this turned into a novel, but I am just really anxious because whether I got in or not, I just want to know. Can anyone give me some comfort? Any idea if I have the potential to get in?

My D also applied, about three weeks ago and has the same message about a decision having been made with a letter in two weeks. I have no inside knoweledge, mind you, but to me, honestly, it doesn’t sound promising for her or you.

If they’ve admitted you, it seems to me they would say so. In fact, she has been accepted at another school and that’s the approach they took: online status saying accepted, an e-mail confirming and congratulating her and saying that she would get the paper confirmation in about two weeks. Perhaps they feel that a simple status line saying that a student was not acccepted would just be too stark or leave them wondering/hoping it was a mistake, or maybe even trigger a phone call, whereas a letter makes it clear.

Again, I really don’t know but that’s my guess and what I’m also telling her.

Thanks for your input! Another school that I got accepted to, had the same thing saying online that I was accepted. Here’s to hoping I suppose :D

I don’t chance people but I know from prior experience that SUNY’s place alot of emphasis on SAT/ACT scores. Hope that helps.

Lots of people are getting the same message on the SUNY-General forum - my D’s changed from not available to a decision has been made, but on the SUNY New Paltz Facebook page it says mid December the letters will go out. I think it just means they have received all of your application materials. Relax, December’s almost here!

Update: Just got the small envelope from New Paltz :frowning: I’m not too upset because, I really had no desire to go there anyway due to its close proximity to where I live. It still hurts to not get into a school though  sigh best of luck to everyone else!

It hurts and leaves a twinge even if you didn’t really want to go, Seventeenwords, but I’m sure you’ve applied other places and it just means you’ll have to wait a bit longer and it will be sweeter when you get the one you want more.

Sorry…that does sting a little I’m sure. Best of luck on your journey to the right school for you.

i got accepted into New Paltz about two weeks ago and i had that same message on the New Paltz mail before i got my acceptance letter

What’s a small envelope? Is it a legal env? My daughter got an env. - 8x11 But won’t be home for a while and I’m wondering!;)

never mind … she got in!

We went on a NP tour and my child got accepted. Most memorable was the disgusting dorm we saw. Are there any decent dorms at NP? we saw a an apartment kind of setup with a private bath shared by 6 or so people I think. It was a real turnoff.

Wed visited NP in December and came away very favorably impressed with the general campus layout (traditional/ closed), library, art studios (daughter is pursing art/design/ed), academic buildings. Main dining hall - OK. Nice Student Union. One area we didn’t look at was dormitories, so Sept2011 input was useful. Need to look into that more. I expect that my daughter will move off campus in Junior year, unless she gets into on-campus townhouse living - but 2 years in a hell-dorm wouldn’t be the way to start things out on a positive note!

College dorms always seem to be more of a shock to parents than they are to the students. For example, some other schools have tripled their residents. However, when it comes to break up the triple, many students choose to stay tripled! The idea of living in a small space, sharing a bathroom and so forth is not appealing to any adult, but the students adapt and actually come to like it. By the time they are juniors and seniors though, many a ready for a change and some increased responsibility.

New Paltz dorms do vary quite a bit. The newer dorms are Esopus and Lenape. I have heard they are the nicest. They are redoing one of the dorms over the summer I believe. There are corridor styled dorms and suite style. When looking it is good to see more than one. But dorms in general at most colleges tend to be cramped and unappealing. In New Paltz, there is a lot of off-campus housing around the town that is walking distance to the school. My son came in as a transfer so had to go for off-campus housing and found a very nice townhouse.

We visited New Paltz and my daughter applied but didn’t get in. She wasn’t that thrilled with it when we visited, didn’t really like the students or the campus but applied because her dad didn’t want her that far away from home. Ironically, she’s at another SUNY MUCH further away and she loves it… I much preferred the one she’s at now over NP, too.

She does have friends who love NP and a couple who’ve already left.
