Ok so I'm kind of set on going to college in New York state. So far I've applied to Mount Saint Mary College and The College of Saint Rose. I came across SUNY New Paltz and it seems perfect for me, especially location wise, and now I'm wondering about my chances so here it is...
I'm a senior at one of the top high schools in Ohio. However, I slacked off a lot my freshman and sophomore year and then began actually trying hard my junior year. My GPA is 2.9 (I know, it sucks) and my ACT com. is a 23, the reason being I only got a 20 in math...
I was involved in extra curricular activities throughout my high school career including dance team, spanish club, and environmental club. I emailed admissions and they said they only look at apps with a 2.7 or above which I have. Anyone have any advice?

I love SUNY New Paltz too! I just found out a few days ago I got accepted. I hope you do too!

I’ll try and be as honest and fair as I can here. New Paltz seems to be a fairly competitive school to get into. Based on their website, the average GPA of incoming freshman in high school was a 92, so your GPA is considerably low. However, your ACT score is about where their average is (I think their average ACT score is anywhere from 25-28), and you were involved in alot of extra curriculars too, which is also good.

Did you take the SAT? If so, what did you get on it? I was also on the low end of the spectrum for New Paltz (1180 on Math & English for the SAT, 26 on ACT) but I had a good high school GPA.

Maybe there’s a way you could take the SAT or the ACT again before they make their final decision? If you feel that you could possibly do better, it would definetly be a leg up. However, don’t be completely discouraged–they also take into account clubs/activities and the kind of student you are. They will be able to see that you started trying harder your junior & senior year, and maybe they’ll appreciate that and like that. You’re also from Ohio, which is an advantage for you, because they like to take students from all over the US, not just NYS.

Even if you don’t get into New Paltz though, don’t worry, there’s plenty of colleges and everything will work out for the best. Good luck and I hope everything goes the way you want it to! If you have any questions for me, feel free to ask… I’m always on this site hopign people will answer my posts about NP’s journalism program :P
