im currently a commuting student at suny albany and im considering transferring to suny plattsburgh for the upcoming semester. i am a computer science major and i was wondering how to two schools compare when it comes to academic prestige, computer science department strength, and overall. my biggest worry is that if i transfer to plattsburgh and get a computer science degree it wont hold much merit.

I graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1983 with a computer science degree. The school got PCs my senior year. Until then, we were still punching cards. I know you don’t even know what that means, but the point is: SUNY Plattsburgh has always been committed to computer science. I know nothing about their current program, but I’m sure it’s fantastic. I know the world is a different place, but my degree from SUNY Plattsburgh did not hold me back.

Just curious, if not for your major, what is attracting you to Plattsburgh over Albany?

I received my BA from SUNY Plattsburgh and got my MS Computer Science from SUNY Albany. I liked both schools but preferred Plattsburgh for the following reasons.
- Plattsburgh is smaller.
- Classes less likely to be taught by teaching assistants.
- The Adirondacks
- Lake Champlain
- Montreal is only 60 miles away

SUNY Albany is a fine school and is preferable to Plattsburgh for Graduate studies.

My older son just finished his first year at Suny Plattsburgh as a computer science major and loves it. The profs are very helpful and easy to talk to for help. He chose Plattsburgh for its location and the fact that they gave him a great scholarship. He did have to take Computer Science again even though he got a 4 on the AP exam since Plattsburgh uses Python as well as Java. The dept even had an end of the year picnic for the students and profs. In addition, they have an honors program and honors society on campus to help strengthen your grad school resume.

I agree that SUNY Albany is preferred for graduate studies. I got my undergrad at Plattsburgh in Business Management, live in Boston and have done as well in my career as others from the private and public Boston area colleges. Having said that, I wouldn’t think there is an advantage to transferring to Plattsburgh from Albany. The area is beautiful on the lake and and Montreal is pretty cool too. Weigh the pros and cons…

Albany has more academic prestige. I guess it’s a matter of preference for majors though.
