@MommaOfArtist28 The 3 kids we know who made the waitlist (including my D) were videotaped at the audition.
@MommaOfArtist28 - thanks - she recovered, as they do. The rest are a mix of MT programs and a couple of liberal arts/BA/strong theater/dance programs - no other BFA/acting. She does have some MT/BFA acceptances from schools she’d be very happy to attend, but we’re waiting until all are finalized to post these on CC.
@MommaOfArtist28 - funny - I typed this days ago and see that I never posted it. Thanks again - had excellent news since then, so all is good.
@rampions Congratulations!!
D received a call this afternoon offering her a spot off the waitlist! We are awaiting the financial letter but she is over the moon!
Is this where she ultimately wants to go?
Congratulations @artskids! Getting that call from the wait list is almost a better feeling than an initial acceptance, isn’t it?
@bisouu At this point, she says only a yes from Guthrie would change her mind. She’s laying everything out now (yes -ALL decisions start with an awesome spreadsheet) but her Purchase just feels right to her.
@Delegator she said she couldn’t even answer - she just started crying!!
Congratulations, artskids! If she does go to Purchase, could you post about her experience there? All the threads about the Purchase BFA Acting program are from 2010 or earlier. It would be great to have current information from a student attending!
@actorparent of course!
Congrats to your daughter, @artskids.
Thank you @soozievt !
Yes, congratulations @artskids - that is a very nice door to have open up!
@artskids Conratulations. Either Purchase or Guthrie, it is a win-win decision. Also @actorparent, my S is finishing his freshman year at Purchase for BFA Acting so I may be able to give both of you some information. From my perspective the program has been amazing. He has learned so much and the environment is incredibly positive. Freshman through seniors are friendly and interact with each other. There does not seem to be a sense of competition, but is instead comradery.
The campus is a little isolated (Mom and Dad liked the safety of that), he originally viewed it as a negative compared to his other top choices (New School and Pace) but Manhattan is a $17 train ride away and the cost of attending Purchase is so much lower he can afford to see shows regularly. He visits the city about every two to three weeks.
He has had opportunities to attend fundraising events by documentary filmmakers, work behind the scenes with guest directors and visit with former students on and off Broadway after the shows. They are currently building a new center for theatre, film and media which is a good sign of the school’s commitment to the conservatory program. It is a rigorous conservatory program which keeps him very busy. Summer school is a must. I’m sure it is similar to others in the Consortium of Conservatories for Theatre Training which includes UNCSA, BU and CMU.
I’ve gained so much from this message board I thought it might be time to contribute so if you have any questions, please ask questions and I’ll try to help.
@istilldontknow, thank you so much for responding! It sounds like a great program!
Can you ask your son what kind of acting techniques are taught (i.e. is it mostly Meisner-based, is it a toolbox approach, etc.)? And I think the movement is Suzuki-based - is that right? Also, what do you mean by “Summer school is a must”? Thanks for your input!!!
@istilldontknow yes - I’d like to hear about summer school
@actorparent I’ll ask him about the methods but in the mean time regarding my summer school comment. The conservatory classes alone make up about 115 credit hours and they need to have an additional 5 classes to meet the SUNY core requirements. Unfortunately for my S all his AP classes missed the mark for those. They recommend that all core classes are done before the junior year since they will be so busy after that. He took two cores this year, will take two over the summer than one more next year. Most BFA’s require 120-124 credit hours, Purchase requires 132.
Thanks! Even if it’s tricky to get it all in, I know that my daughter will be happy to hear that they only require 5 gen eds, AND that the conservatory training itself is SO rigorous and so many credits that it’s hard to fit even that measly amount of gen eds in! (My daughter definitely wants conservatory training with as few gen eds as possible, so this will all be a positive to her, aside from needing summer school. )
@actorparent Sounds like acting is a toolbox approach. They did some Meisner this year and he said second year ins largely Strasberg but they don’t hold exclusively to that. Haven’t heard about movement technique, but I do know his instructor this year is also an instructor in the dance conservatory. Hard to argue with that. :-*
