SUNY Purchase conservatory

MY daughter just got accepted there…how do you like the program and teachers? All information will be greatly appreciated…thx

Well, there is this rumor that they only let you sing in Swedish.

If you interested in voice, you should PM Sopranorose. She is giving some feedback on other threads. The feedback that I get about the program seems to be teacher specific so find out from her or someone else if you are allowed to have any say in which teacher you get or if you only find out when you arrive in the fall. Then find out how open they are to switching teachers. I would never recommend a program in which there is a lot of drama when a teacher change is requested. I know of too many kids who have to leave programs when teacher changes were denied.

Symbols, feel free to pm me if you have any specific questions.

In terms of generality, you sing for the voice faculty when you get there and they all decide who should get who. Each teacher has a certain area that they really shine in for helping students, for example, if a teacher happens to be very good at helping students find resonance, and a particular student needs help with resonance, then guess who they are probably going to get. You are encouraged to be very close with your teacher and really have a relationship with them to really get everything you can out of their teachings.

As far as switching teachers, I know people who have switched teachers and people who have been switched. If you want to switch teachers, you go to Jacque and explain why. You are allowed to switch at the end of the year if there really is a problem. I think the method there is because you need at least a year to decide if the teacher is good/bad for you, and also so you don’t make rash decisions about switching teachers.

I don’t know anyone who has had to leave because of a voice teacher problem. I know people who have left for other reasons, but if a student really feels that strongly about why they need a t eacher change, there is probably another factor in that equation.

Basically, I really like Purchase’s opera program, they are absolutely great for undergrads and for giving performance opportunity, and the bond you form with your teacher is supposed to be a good thing.

I’m sorry to switch up the subject a little bit, but does anyone know about Purchase’s ensemble/performance opportunities, particularly for instruments?

when we visited, and looked at the bulletin board, it appeared that all of the flute students were… distributed to the various ensembles. Not sure how the assignments are made

There’s lots of ensemble opportunities, some are audition based and some are not.
