Hi - haven’t seen much discussion about SUNY Purchase Opera. Has anyone visited recently, or know current students. My daughter was just admitted. She had her weakest audition there, assumed she would not get in, and didn’t spend much time on campus. I’d love to hear any opinions or info
Wow when did she audition? Congrats!
Congratulations, @cgmndt ! I don’t know anything about the SUNY Purchase program, but I hope someone here will be able to help!
I believe I have seen some of their undergrad in good graduate programs. You may want to ask where some of their recent undergrads have gone for graduate programs and check the associated teachers. It’s not an uncommon question and can provide peace of mind. School websites may list alumni accomplishments as well…however that can be subject to alumni and teachers keeping an eye on this. Some schools/teachers are more proactive in this area than others. So asking is probably the best way to know.
S has some good friends in the opera program. It is evidently extremely demanding, but I don’t have first hand knowledge other than hearing some performances. (Which I found impressive, but I’m not an expert!) S briefly worked with the director when he played for their Classic Broadway show last semester. I can help you with questions about campus and the conservatory as a whole. If you have specific questions, let me know, either here or via PM. Congratulations to your D!
thanks! My daughter’s voice teacher sang with Lyric Opera in Chicago, she is a tough critic and she says Purchase Operas are really good. Do you know anything about a music major’s social life? I have heard the campus is really quiet on the weekends. Does the school arrange trips to New York to see shows? How big os the voice department - website says “highly selective” - not sure what that means in actual numbers
An old thread on here described the whole department as :cold" - any thoughts? Some of the complaints on the 10 year old thread are not valid anymore - ex: D’s acceptance came in about a week, not mid April as other people mentioned. They do give sample lessons now. so things seem to be improving.
It is highly selective. I read around 20% acceptance rate. Congrats to your D!
@cgmndt how was your daughter notified of admission and when did she audition?
Sent you a book via PM!
She auditioned Feb 19, and was sent an email this week. Official package will arrive in the mail in a few weeks. If she is not offered a scholarship I am not sure we can seriously consider the school. Still, nice to be accepted to the program.
