How good is there visual arts program? Is it selective? Do they give good scholarships?

whats the problem..ya'll cant even answer one question..i mean there 7 views...............BUMP

Because we don’t know much.
They are hosting NPD this year. Otherwise we don’t bother go up there unless desperate.
Why? Metro north cost $ with bad schedule and from there have to take bus that doesn’t run all hours like NYC, everyone I know went there for visual art either quitted or transferred out for one reason or another. Campus is ugly, it’s commute school with no spirit, artwork sucks, can’t drive and too much fuss……
We shall see and so should you yourself. Assuming heading for SUNY means you are in- state. Yet another reason, why else should we bother.

I am starting at SUNY Purchase...but for their acting program...in a week. I don't know much about their visual art program. I don't think it is as selective as the ones they're famous for (like acting or dance) but I will look into it when I am there. I do know they have an art museum on campus and a lot of venues for presentation of art.

The things that bears and dogs said about the school have nothing to do with the PROGRAM at Purchase (though I admit they were concerns of mine at first). But if you love the program enough at a school, other things like the campus environment aren't all that important. Ill try to get back to you about the art program.

Yah museum and such.
I called to ask if we could see their student show in the spring but being told that hallway where works are on were not accessible during weekends.
With bus schedule and what not, HS kids can't go see it unless they'd skip their school. Don't you want to see students' works rather than what's in their museum collection?

thanks blueroses1

Yeah Purchase is known for their famous Acting Program..but I hear the Art + Design program is not to bad! But their most selective school is The Conservatory of Theatre Arts..

Did NPD. It was rather nice. Well organized, roomy, maps are great, students helpers are very attentive. I am sorry ever badmouthed about the school.
Had art tour, saw pouring of bronze into mold, very dramatic with standing ovation. (we are already standing anyway)
Facilities are beaten up reminded me of old middle school. Lockers covered with immature graffiti, beer bottle in gavage pail, ceiling panels missing fluorescent tubes broken computer labs chairs cheap hard plastic etc…you can see all problems of tight budget state school for mediocre artist/ scholar but, program covers everything and if one is determined to make it there, they will and come out with BFA debt free.
Dorms really do look like prisons, food hit and miss. Best hush brown ever eaten and worst pasta in any school cafeteria ever.
Kids are not as diverse as I thought, hard economy caused more out of state better off kids choosing to go there. Stunning looking dance kids to typical manga art sort sitting at separate tables. It is more commuter school but enough stays around weekends.
One big plus is the funky student center with arcade machines, pool tables, old hodge podge furniture and band practice room. Love those vinyl animals decor.
It seems found great safe/ match school assuming one will disciplined enough not to slack off, which is very easy to do acording to our tour guide.
NY, NY if you can make it there you can make it anywhere, just that NYC is two hours and 15 bucks plus away good business hours only.

Purchase P.S.
Starbucks in the campus. At one of newer building, Gym? Dorm? Can’t tell only saw it as our bus drove away. quite far to walk but real Starbucks. I don't know if student friendly priced, I doubt it. That could be there to serve locals or cover the costs of ink cartridges that $200-300 lab fee falls short.
Meanwhile dining hall coffee was just awful. Highway Truck stops kind but milk runs free - whole skim 2% and soy.
