I’m majoring in engineering and trying to make my final decision on schools. Any input on Stonybrook vs. U Delaware? I’ve heard the academics are strong in both colleges. Any feedback on class size, teacher quality, getting internships and campus life would be appreciated. I would be dorming at either school.
I think Delaware has a better campus life. Many Stony Brookers go home on weekends.
Stony Brook is more commuter, and the environment at UDel is better for college students (nice town).
However, how much will each cost if you don’t subtract any loan?
Where do you get the idea that Stony Brook is a commuter school? 9,000 undergrads live on campus, including 83% of freshmen. http://www.stonybrook.edu/sb/fastfacts/
IMHO, Stony Brook is an academically better school than University of Delaware. Stony Brook is well known for STEM fields. Are you in-state of one of these colleges?
Stony Brook would be less cost for me but cost isn’t the only factor I’m looking at.
Ok, commuter school isn’t the precise term, the precise term is “suitcase”. Students are on campus four days a week and go home on Fridays.
I agree that it’s very strong for most STEM fields, but UDel has very strong programs in Engineering (DuPont foundation and all that). It is also more residential.
@DM2021: can you complete this with actual numbers for each university
(tuition, fees, room, board) - (scholarships, grants) =
Or if you know it’s affordable, you can assume that it’s none of our business.
^ the issue is that many students get confused with the terms of their package and don’t know which is better.
A typical mistake is comparing scholarship amounts, for instance. “College A gave me a 10k scholarship but college B gave me 20k scholarship!”
Except College A costs 33k and College B costs 56 k sticker price.
Or, also typical, the student who thought she had a full ride because the college had presented the amount 'over four years '.
Writing down the numbers makes them a bit more real, and easier to compare.
I’d rather not give the details of my scholarships at this time but Stony Brook is definitely more cost effective and I know both schools have strong engineering programs. I had heard the “suitcase” factor of Stony Brook and am trying to decide how much that affects me. I am not looking for a party school by any means but I would like the feel of a community and getting to know my peer students in a social atmosphere outside of class. Based on feedback above and other feedback I received, it seems like Delaware wins out on that factor. I plan on going to Accepted Students Day for each University. I hope to come to a decision shortly after that.
Thank you all for your input.
MYOS1634, I’ve taken that into account. I have a spreadsheet for all of my accepted schools that includes Tuition and Room and Board if that applies then back out my scholarship amount to come to my net cost.
