Opinions of SUNY MT programs
They’re all super-cold and snowy!
The University at Buffalo is a BFA by audition. Stephen McKinley Henderson (who is known for award-winning stage acting–he was featured in this month’s American Theatre Magazine and I loved what he had to say about acting) is a professor there. An acting professor, not musical theater, but still cool to have a respected, award-winning NY actor as a professor.
New Paltz students can choose to focus on Music Theatre. People who I know who have attended there have loved it and I know of one recent graduate who is on a national tour for a musical right now. Admission to the program is by interview, not audition.
Cortland is a BA but by audition.
Fredonia is a BFA by audition. Next year, they’re producing Seussical as guest directed/choreographed by Jennifer Cody, who graduated from the department. Jennifer has experience in a number of Broadway, Off-Broadway, and regional shows. I think it says something about the program that she wants to give back.
I don’t know about the others.
Thank you so much
Fredonia’s program is on the rise, again. It has been up/down over the past two decades, but I would say it is the strongest current SUNY.
Cortland also has a reputable program. Maybe not a top tier school, but very nice for someone looking for in-state, low cost with high upside.
I would put both of these programs above UB (SUNY Buffalo) on any list.
