Hi! I was wondering if anyone had experience getting into SUNYs with an SAT on the lower end of the spectrum. My brother, a junior, took it this month and got a 1490 (530CR, 440M, 520W). I'm not sure how much higher he'll be able to raise it so we're operating under the assumption right now that this is pretty much it.

Everything else is solid. He has an A average, his teachers absolutely adore him and told him they'd be thrilled to write his recs, he does extracurriculars, and his essay will be fine.

He really likes New Paltz and Albany. We visited Purchase too, he thought it was okay. He loves Stony Brook but I'm not holding my breath on that one. Also, he needs to stay within 3 hours or so of Long Island.

Does anyone have any familiarity with applying to SUNYs with this type of profile? I'm not sure where to tell him to apply, especially as a safety. He's a really motivated, really nice kid. Any personal experiences would be great! Thanks!

I would go to ■■■■■■■■■■. put in his information and choose a college and it will show you on a graph what grades and SAT scores were accepted. It can give you an idea if you are a good candidate or not.

He should apply to many of the SUNY colleges. Why 3 hrs of LI?
Buffalo state is a 45 minute plane ride to LGA or JFK. Can take Southwest from Islip through Baltimore as well. Worth considering. Oswego? He can fly from Syracuse. Most SUNY’s have bus transportation from campus to NYC or LI for holiday vacations.

Also, consider having him take the ACT instead. My sons found it easier than the SAT (though not all do). YOu do not need to send the SAT scores if he does better on the ACTs. Son #2 only took the ACT (no SAT for him… learned that from Son1) and was accepted at the 3 SUNYs (and everywhere else he applied).

The three hours thing is admittedly kind of an arbitrary distance, but he’s type 1 diabetic and wants to be close to his doctors and close enough to come home in case of an emergency. He’s not really an airplane kind of person.

He’s taking the SATs in June so I really hope he does well on that.
