I want to write my supplement essay about my journey to athiesm, etc, etc.
Would this be a bad idea?

Well, I think religion is too much of a touchy-subject and you risk offending someone at admissions who might be religious. It might be important and deeply personal to you, but the risk involved may not be worth it. It would be similar to you writing about why you are democrat/republican, except atheists are the minority so unfortunately, odds are against you.

Instead, write about something more neutral or make the essay not about atheism, but why you are more logical / willing to question what many believe, which will suit you later in life as being able to decide for yourself what is true or not. Make it about being an independent thinker and rationalizer, just don’t outright say you don’t believe in god.

If you can write a compelling essay about it, I think you should do it. I don’t think any admissions officers would be offended by you discussing your religious beliefs, as long as you don’t do so by bashing the beliefs of others, and I think it’s better to tackle a slightly risky subject and stand out because of it than to write a very generic essay that nobody will remember.

I agree. If the essay is about you, your journey and what it changed about you, it should be ok. Be sure to avoid any form of value judgement against religion or a religious group as that could be perceived as offensive.

You can not believe in god and be an independent thinker and rationalizer as long as you have your reasons and can explain them in a comprehensive fashion.

Go with antarius.
From what you say, it seems like describing your journey will allow you to own your essay. As for bashing other beliefs. don’t do it. however, there’s is a difference in tongue-in-cheek humor and actual bigotry. Use common sense or seek an expert’s advice when creating your essay. Expert as in anyone who has a vested interest in you to succeed, like older college siblings/counselors/private counselors ect.
