Supplement Essay

In it’s supplement essay question (bowdoin col), it says–

Bowdoin is a liberal arts college which is unusually vibrant intellectually. Some students enter Bowdoin with a clear commitment to a particular course of study; others come considering a broader range of academic possibilities while seeking the intellectual path which most excites them. What all students will share is exposure to the breadth and depth the Bowdoin curriculum provides. Describe what you expect your academic journey at Bowdoin to include.

Plz suggest how do I focus subject matter on writing the essay? I mean, concentrating the essay on major and it’s courses; my aim and all, — or just that I can write about what I’d expect at Bowdoin from academics to ECs.

When it says “…you expect your academic journey…” should I not write about ECs and other activities?

How did you write on the topic?
How would you suggest me?

I'm writing that essay for Bowdoin College as well. I think when they say "academic journey" we'd better stick to the "academic" aspect i.e. how the school's curriculum, activities, etc. are going to help you with your study. If an activity is related to your academic pursuit, I think you can include it alright. Good luck!

Ugh I'm writing this essay too, and I agree with novice. So far it's not going too well...

i didnt specify a specific major when i wrote this...i kinda wrote it in terms of everything that I will do and that i want to gain from a Bowdoin education.
so it was more abstract than just i want to study this major and take this class and that class

I did kind of a combination of the more abstract strategy and the pick-some-courses strategy. I'm never too sure how to go about these kinds of essays, since for me it's either be really cliched and talk in generalities about the "wonderful educational opportunities" or get really really specific about various classes and stuff and make it sound like I just went through the catalogue and picked a couple random courses to mention. ugh.

Now that I mention it, I think I might go back and edit mine again...

yeah i was wondering if they want to know about the academic area you are passionate about, or how you want to take advantage of bowdoin's resources, or ... i don't even know

I'm so confused on this essay. It's the only one that I haven't done, even though I'm applying early. Why can't they just be like the other schools and ask why we want to attend Bowdoin? I could ramble on and on in that essay. But Bowdoin is a thousand times better than them, so they have to have a more difficult admissions essay.

i keep putting off this essay, because i have no clue what to write about. How am I suppose to tell them what i expect when i don't go to the school yet? Right now, it seems as if i'm just writing fluff..."oh, bowdoin has excellent , so of course, i expect _. or "Bowdoin offers lots of encouragement to students to _, so I expect." blah blah blah. i feel like i'm just repeating all the stuff they've written on thier website, etc and i'm just sucking up to them. any suggestions from anyone to make this actually seem good?

I'm glad I'm not the only one unsure what to do with this. but I don't really think it's a make or break deal; as long as you show interest in the school and give some semblance of why Bowdoin would be a good fit for you, it should be fine.

I wrote this two days ago--it definitely needs a lot of editing, haha. But I think I combined the more abstract with the more technical as well--a bit about Bowdoin's awesome political science department, but more about how the global focus and amazing curriculum fits my needs, etc.
