My parents insist on saving any article from local newspapers and whatnot that feature my accomplishments (sports honors, recognition from the state for a local leadership commission, etc.). They tell me that they intend to send it along with my college application when I apply. Is this a good idea (even if they just send the significant ones)? I am not sure that college admissions officers would want to see this extra stuff considering the huge pile of applications they have to deal with. Thanks.

As long as the colleges don't prohibit such submissions and as long as the submissions aren't excessive or frivolous, they can help your application. I don't suggest submitting more than 2-3 such articles, and I think it's important to make sure the articles are different, not rehashes of the same info.

There is a spot in the Common App for listing such honors. backup documentation is neither necessary nor encouraged.

Thanks so much. I'll be sure to tell them that ; ).
