Supplemental Material

Composing music is something i like doing in my free time. Even though it's not an "extracurricular activity," it's something I do for personal enjoyment. I'm not applying to the arts, I'm applying to Pratt....Does Duke encourage sending materials like this?

Thanks in advance!

yea, i e-mailed the admissions office and they told me that as long as you indicate it, its all good... and it gets sent directly to the respective department where the faculty evaluates it

Unless your music composition is extremely serious, I would not advise it. The music department will be putting your compositions under strict scrutiny, and typically expects top level work. They also are looking for work that will have some sort of academic or college performance value. The people who send their music compositions often have written symphonies or other complex compositions before the age of 15.

Use your best judgment.

if you can honestly say that you are proud of your work, send it. i think that's the best test. (I sent a flute CD, but i'm very serious about music...)
