if i want to send a supplemental recommendation from a summer program with my application, how would i go about doing that? should i send a copy of the letter or the original? how should i address it to make sure it gets put into my file?

My thoughts...if you are using the common app-applying online or even hard copy application w/essays, then you may wish to xerox the recommendation and include itwith your counselors recommendation/school transcript. Give a copy to your counselor for your school file, too.

Only send one in if you KNOW that it's going to be good. And when I say good, I mean that the person writes a very detailed and specific one, not just the usual "She was a delight to have!" "One of a kind!". If it adds nothing new to your other recommendations, don't send it in.

You should also make sure that the colleges accept supplementals, some don't these days. I would have her write the letter and then attach a cover page explaining what it is and with your name, school, social security number, and birthdate.

well i've read the recommendation, as it was sent to me. but it's an evaluation by a professor who teaches at the school. and it's pretty positive, just vouching for my writing ability. maybe i could just give it to my counselor to send with my transcript and recs, like the above poster suggested?

If you have read the recommendation, colleges won't consider it. For a college to consider a recommendation, it needs to be signed and sealed in a way that proves that you have not read it. If you have the original recommendation right now in a way that means you would be able to zerox and send it, it won't matter. The only people who should be able to do that are the author and the school officials working on your app. Unfortunately, there's probably not anything you could do that would make a college consider a rec you've read/ is not sealed. The authors aren't even supposed to show them to you even if they send in another sealed copy. The only way out of it may be to have the person who wrote the supplemental rec contact your school and give your GC permission to copy the letter and sign it (my college counselor has permission from some teachers to do this).

Also, remember that some colleges won't consider the supplemental recs. I applied to a very small private LAC and added two teacher recs. Being a tiny school, I couldn't imagine them not considering them. However, when I contacted them, they said they wouldn't consider any rec that wasn't sent to them on their rec form, which had questions for a school GC.

ahhhh, well okay then, that settles that. i could get the editor-in-chief of a newspaper i've interned at to write me a supplemental rec but i'm afraid she doesn't know me very well beyond my writing.
