SURF Housing

I'm a UCLA student who is accepted for SURF 2009...just received the acceptance forms, and I'm not familiar with which housing is best for me.

Would anyone give me the inside scoop of the certain housing available? SURF provides North Houses, South Houses, and Avery House. Is there a certain one that everyone wants that I should reserve ASAP?

By the way, I'd really like a single but within good distance from Baxter, where I'll prolly work. From the descriptions, the only provided housing that have single rooms are South and Avery...

Ideal room:
-single
-clean
-quiet (minimal outside noise)
-not social (will be studying for the MCATs, but there should be a very available library...not packed like at UCLA?)

**By the way, please describe a day in the life of a SURF student. I heard it'll be hard to study for the MCATs but if I'm gonna take the Sept one, then I'll have to.

Thanks so much for helping out!

The campus is tiny, everything will be close to Baxter. The library is not too crowded usually.

Because of the rules we have at our campus regarding house selection, we’re really not supposed to state things in a public forum that may bias potential students towards or against a house.

I will tell you that the Houses (North + South) are undergrads only, whereas Avery is a mix of students, faculty, and graduate students. This may help you make your decision.

this will depend on your lab
when i was working in surf (on a programming/bioinformatics project) i basically just came at 9 and left at 6
but if you’re an experiment person your experiments might be at odd hours of the night etc

In regards to housing we can tell you that the North Houses do not have singles, the South Houses are mostly singles, and Avery is a mix of the two. The North and South Houses only house undergraduates. Avery hosts professors, grad students and undergraduates. In regards to facilities, Avery is the newest of the group, but the South Houses were renovated recently and have central air conditioning and such. The North Houses have single room air conditioning in only certain rooms; you can pay housing to install an air conditioning unit in your room if you wish though.
