I was wondering how close Cal is to some of the surf spots near Point Reyes and Santa Cruz and if it is something that is doable on a weekday there.

We are from Santa Cruz. My son is a hard core surfer who was an undergrad at Cal from '94-'99 and is now back at Cal as a post-doc. He surfs quite a bit, mostly at Ocean Beach, sometimes at Pacifica and at assorted other breaks in San Francisco and Marin.

yea, santa cruz is a bit of a drive, but san Francisco beaches (Ocean beach, mainly) and Stinson, in Marin county, have good spots.

Santa Cruz is 2.5+ hours away and highway 17 isn't great for driving at night.

Marin has some good spots. Berkeley's not a bad campus for a surfer, really. Not quite Pepperdine, but good nonetheless.

[Ed. note: Before anyone gets on my case as hating Cal because of my comment, I only mean that Pepperdine has a very very good location for surfing. That's all. This statement is by no means indicative of Cal's academics. At all.]

during welcome week, i was kickin' it at some frat,...don't remember where. and while we were hiding from some some cops or something, i got to sharing a piece with this really nice surfer from huntington beach, who was like..23, and goes to cal in the fall, and surfs pro during the spring. It was a really nice chat, learned alot from this guy,...really laid back, knew how to dig life.
just thought i'd share.
