Surrounding town of Westwood

Basically, what's it like? Are there cool restaurants, cafes, movie theatres, clubs and the like? Current UCLA students, how often do you leave campus for entertainment purposes, or can you pretty much find everything you need on campus?
Are the residents of Westwood pretty tolerant of UCLA kids?
Also, I'm probably not planning on bringing a car...parking, I've heard, sucks, and is expensive. Is there a circulating bus that takes you from campus to Westwood Village?
I've heard Westwood is very safe, unlike the neighborhood surrounding...ahem, USC!

There’s usually something going on on campus, and they have all the basic necessities, but Westwood is a huge perk for us students.

Restaurants: Diddy Riese (the famous ice cream sandwich for only $1.75 (used to be $1.50…:[)), BJ’s, Thai/Asian places, 800 Degrees (awesome make-your-own-pizza), Brent’s deli, In-N-out, and more…

Movie Theatre: there’s the Regency theatre, they have 2 theatres. And they’ll occasionally have the movie premiers and all the celebrities/actors come :D

So yeah, there’s stuff to do in Westwood, it’s just a 15 min walk (yes, there’s a bus if you really don’t feel like walking…) But if that gets a little boring, there’s the big blue bus to take you down to third street promenade/santa monica!!! (only 50 cents for students) So it’s not as if you feel like you’re trapped here, you have options. I mean, there’s also Griffith observatory, Getty museum (free for students), and a lot more places that i haven’t explored yet either. And as for Westwood residents…well, it’s mainly students anyways, and everyone else knows that it’s pretty much a part of UCLA anyways, so yeah, they’re tolerant of UCLA kids :D

And we’re def safer compared to the other shady side of town… (but you still don’t want to be wandering alone at 3 in the morning…)

Supermarkets: Ralph’s, Wholefood and Trader Joes

Best Buy, CVS Pharmacy, Rite Aid,

FedEx, and some places you can make copies for posters/papers

Bank of America, Wells Fargo, AT&T,verizon wireless and others for your cell phone services

Restaurants: Berger King, California Kitchen…

Hammer Museum

Hair cut places

Thoese are all in walking distance.

TONS of restaurants, 2 small movie theaters that often hold movie premieres, some clothing stores and boutiques, etc. Westwood pretty much feels like an extension of UCLA, it is really fun and definitely safe. You don’t need a car at all (unless you have a job far away off campus) because you can easily walk to Westwood and if you feeling adventurous, take the bus around LA.

Some folks seem to be confused about the local neighborhoods. UCLA is in Westwood, so there’s no need to walk to Westwood, as you’re already there when you’re on campus. Westwood Village (a small commercial area within Westwood) is itself adjacent to campus, so there’s no bus needed.

In fact there are tens of thousands of residents of Westwood who are not UCLA students. These are almost exclusively wealthy white old people, with homes starting in the million+ range. So they don’t really tolerate UCLA students at all, but, fortunately, campus is relatively well isolated from the rest of the community.

They still have a negative impact on UCLA students as whole. For example, it’s due to them that UCLA doesn’t have a football stadium on campus.
