So I kinda just would like to get an idea on some of the social life as a first year student.

How far is Westwood from UCLA campus itself? Can you actually walk there to the movie theaters, restaurants, stores, etc. (as in no form of vehicle transportation necessary at all!)?

How expensive are the things in Westwood? My cousin at Stanford says Palo Alto is extremely expensive so she rarely goes around that area often.

Do many people go home on the weekends to the point that the entire campus is dead silent?

Can you actually walk around campus or Westwood late at night (like at 1 AM or 2 AM) and actually be safe? I thought about this for 'SC and I know for sure you can't walk outside of campus at around 1 AM unless you wanna get robbed or shot :p

How big is football at UCLA? (I'm a big college football fan, but I know UCLA football sucks butt :( ) And how exactly does one get to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena if one doesn't have a car?

Are there any frats that aren't all into drinking like crazy? I like going to parties and all, but I don't really drink.

Food and stuff isn’t going to be more expensive than anything else but as a guy I’ve found that it’s nearly impossible to pick up a pair of jeans for under like $150 here. Clothes are the only thing I have a gripe about, but you can always hit up the bus if you need to go to a mall.

People go home on the weekends but not that many. Plus those that usually go home every weekend aren’t the ones that are going out everynight and doing tons of stuff. Either way most people stay on campus…it’s not dead on the weekends.

You can walk around westwood and the campus late at night. I’ve gone into westwood at 2am either to hit up habibis or to get some subway/taco bell. Not a problem or unsafe at all.

It’s not nearly as big as at other schools but it’s still pretty big. I’m assuming it’ll be bigger next year because we have one of the best coaching staffs in the country and it looks like we’ll start seeing real success in the next few years. If you don’t have a car there are plenty of ucla busses that bring the majority of UCLA students to/from the games. It’s not a problem at all. I think you just need to get a “bus ticket” the day before the game, it’s like $2 or something.

I’m sure the christian fraternity isn’t that big on it, but assuming you’re talking about the social fraternities there’s drinking but at the same time you’re never going to be forced to drink. Almost everybody else will be drinking though.

I did it. Small defenseless Asian girl. It was on the night of Undie Run, though, and I was fully dressed. So that probably should be taken into account. But it is sort of a pointless question, because we have Escort services (get your mind out of the gutter) that everyone should have programmed into their cell, and they can come and walk you home late at night.

The sad thing is when I read “we have Escort services,” I literally thought about the escort service that we have. Once I read what was in parenthesis, I was like OHHHHHH.

You’re on a campus with tons of mostly bright, interesting, fun-loving people your age. You’re a short walk to a really nice part of LA with restaurants, movie theaters, etc. It can be as fun as you make it. No worries. Just don’t sit in your room waiting for fun to come to you, although if you leave your door open it has been known to force its way in.

Many organizations have retreats or roadtrips on certain weekends. That gives you time to find a job or study on weekends when not much is going on. This works out great because you play some weekends, but you can really use most of your weekends to study/work.

MrMoo and I found $4 jeans at the Thank You Mart. Granted, they might be old/used(maybe? We haven’t come to a conclusion yet), they were in pretty good condition, and in weird sizes that fit me…

Not completely dead. Then again, I lived at De Neve… At any rate, it does die out a bit on the weekends.
There are several malls in the area: Century City, Westside Pavillion… it’s not impossible. In Westwood… there aren’t that many options for men’s apparel.
Beg to differ.
Agreed with the others. North Village (where all the apartments are) isn’t the best-lit. Some of the roads kinda suck (e.g. Strathmore, Kelton…) The village itself is fine.
