Surviving high school w/ an accent??

well I'm European and my parent are moving to US for a few years(expanding business..)
so how do i go to all-american school if i have this horrible accent???
i know english pretty well, but accent just kills me(

most people in my area think accents are cool :p

Honestly? In most cases, I think you would get positive attention for having a European accent... a lot of kids think European accents are cool!

Don't take yourself too seriously and people won't feel like that they need to make fun of you so much. Don't be afraid to make fun of yourself. :)
I don't believe you'll have much of a problem. There's a girl with a British accent around here and people like her. I personally love British accents. I'm sorry I missed Cambridge coming to my school. I heard they were a hoot!

agreed on all the above posts. yea, most people think accents are cool....

accents are smeexxyyy

We have several international students, including one german student and one french student. If anything, people like them MORE because of their accents :)

......if only ppl thought the same about indian accents....

^^^ hahaha true that and other asian accents too

European accents are generally well liked if you are decently fluent at English.

I am a native Chinese, but I lived in New Zealand for 5 years before I was 10. I first came to America with a New Zealand accent (British-like with a hint of Australian) and people thought it was interesting.

You can't say the same for Asian or Hispanic accents because they usually say nothing more than FOB. You'll get a long fine if you act natural and friendly.

I saw from your earlier posts that you're Ukrainian.. I know a Ukrainian girl and her accent is pretty cool. She has plenty of friends and I have never seen her hindered by her accent in social situations (she moved to the US in 10th or 11th grade).

Lol, we have a Ukrainian boy in my physics class, Victor...or VEEKtor, as we call him. He's pretty much a social outcast, but that might be because he's 12. Literally 12, he's pretty much the smartest kid in our grade--in AP Calc BC and AP Chem too.

Yeah I know a Ukrainian too. I thought his accent sounded good.

Nobody really pays attention to accents around here. As long as you can actually speak coherent English, most people will actually be attracted to it. Plus, if nothing else, it's a conversation starter =].

I have a friend who's Ukrainian. He's pretty sweet =]. And I kind of happen to be in love with his accent lol.

Well if you're confident on yourself- your appearance, your capabilities, the way you look, the way you sound, etc. - nobody will ever make fun of you. I have a Spanish accent which people love. I think people can subconsciously tell how you feel about yourself and they will treat you respectively. If you are confident, you will be treated just like anyone else. ;)

Accents are adorable! Which one do you have?

i'm ukrainian so i would say kinda like russian(

that's mad hot. russian accents make me want to
a) execute the disloyal
b) get out the lasso and chains

Yeah, you'll be fine with an accent. This one guy who's English was.... meh ended up being just fine in our little 95% white school (He was Asian). :)

Haha, don't worry. I'm pretty sure at some point I used to have a Russian accent (I moved to the US when I was 9) and people didn't mind at all.
