Suspension and Tuition

Unfortunately, my son got suspended last week due to disciplinary reason. He is a freshman at the private college, and I don’t think he needs to bother to appeal because he already missed two weeks of classes and midterm exams because of immediate separation from the campus before the hearing. He is supposed to go back to campus this fall, but now I am not sure whether he can finish his college education on time or not. What I feel bad about is that I had paid enormous tuition and he was suspended a month later. In this case, what does school usually do with the tuition? I sent them an e-mail and they didn’t reply. Can anyone shed some light? Thank you for reading.

Typically colleges have a disciplinary policy - not sure if the policy will include content on refunds but it might.

Or contact the office that administers it - maybe student services.

Does your son want to go back to that school? I can’t imagine he can finish on time - if you mean four years although maybe taking an extra class each semester or summer school or maymester, etc. can help…

Hope it all works out.

An appeal could help with his record, perhaps a lesser offense, a chance to make amends, a path to expunge the penalty of suspension.
Leaving his record alone, he may have trouble transferring, too.
Sometimes a lawyer specializing in student conduct law can help clarify options. There may be state laws involved as well.

Go read the fine print on the college website about refund policies.

Did you do tuition insurance? many private colleges require it. If so, read that fine print as well.

Example of a conduct defense lawyer, below, and types of issues.
Disclaimer- I do not know any such lawyers in real life nor this one that came up on a search.
Any consultation should be free.

Thank you for the comment. I sent an e-mail to the financial department, but I will try with the student services.

Look up the college’s code of conduct. It will let you know who is responsible.

I can’t imagine you can save tuition for a disciplinary issue - but I’d push.

Email means you’ll wait and wait - you need to make calls. Keep on them.

Good luck - hope it works out for your son.

Thank you very much. I’ve heard that this suspension won’t be recorded. He got suspended this time because he had violated the condition of the probation which happened last semester. At that time, I had a conduct lawyer to help him get through the situation… I will try to make calls. Thank you again.

Good luck! So hard to be a freshman these days! Best wishes for success.

Why not call the lawyer again?

It’s not my place - but have you considered pulling him? You are spending hard earned money to educate him.

Getting a conduct violation - whether cheating or drinking, etc. is not good - but everyone makes mistakes.

But following it up with a violation - clearly he’s not making smart decisions - why should you invest your money? Pull him out and put him at a community college.

OK - easy for me to say from afar and I don’t know what happened - but on the surface, it makes me angry that he’s doing this to his parent.

The second time should never have happened.

Being on probation with suspension as the next step was a risky situation. Interesting that the suspension won’t go on record. That’s good. What is the next step if he does it again?

I cannot imagine that you get a full refund but maybe partial is possible. Glad you have a lawyer from the past.

We don’t know enough about this situation to really comment. A second offense would seem to argue for pulling him out, but we don’t know what the offense was and we don’t know if the college is being fair or not. I assume they are being fair because you have not said otherwise.

Tuition refund insurance won’t cover this kind of thing unless some kind of illness, medical or sometimes psychiatric, is involved.
