disciplinary suspension from college

My son got suspended from college for cheating the professors saying he submitted an assignment when he didnt. I am really worried on whats going to happen to him. He is a rising senior. He is very devastated, any advice on how to salvage. Please advice

Importantly, have your son provide you will all the relevant communications with the prof and with the disciplinary committee. Hopefully you already know more than you posted because what you posted doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Then, I would make sure that your son has taken advantage of the student support services such as the ombudsman’s office to make sure that all the relevant processes were followed when a student is brought before the disciplinary committee. Read all the info from the committee and see if there is an appeals process.

What are the terms of the suspension?

Thank you, well he faked some document showing he submitted, it became a big thing, so at this point there is no appeal process. We are past that. Should he come back to the school, try for another, will they even give admission. Currently we are all devastated and do not know how to proceed.

@doschicos he can come back next semester

He’s a senior and he has a chance at coming back next semester? Well I would do that. He should get a job while he’s home. Did they lay out any terms for you?

@PetraMC no terms that I know of, but they did give him an F in that course. , not sure what kind of job he can get mid semester. and this semester he had to leave and withdraw. So we lost almost half the fees. And he was couple of clubs, had to leave all of them and vacate the room, he felt shameful. Of course he got into the mess be not being truthful. W e are trying to figure out what people do. How do they come out of this. Is it better to go for a masters, so this is not the last transcript showing the suspension following him for life. Or just try to find some job after graduation. He is very down and depressed, he has never cheated, he is an average student who does work hard,

I think the punishment sounds fair given the circumstances. He’s close to the finish line so it would seem silly to me to not go back and finish after the suspension.

Shouldn’t be hard to find work if he’s not picky. Plenty of businesses are hiring seasonally right now gearing up for the holidays.

Not all jobs ask for transcripts by any means.

Just withdraw, go home, and come back next semester.
He just learned a life lesson, let him recover, work at a job for a few months, and go back next semester.
If this goes on his transcript it may affect getting into grad school, but there are other ways to get a graduate degree where they may not care (online programs, programs that need tuition $ etc).

@sunnyschool what do you mean by programs that need tuition will take him, dont all schools need tuition? he is a good kid, never got into any trouble. When we asked him why he did it, he said quite a few kids used to always do that. Other professors never followed up, but his professor did. And schools make you clear the dorm right away, like public flogging, Agree he needs to be punished

WIll this haunt him for rest of his life.

There are grad degrees like “MS Data Science” or “Business Analytics” programs that are online. They are money makers for good schools like Cornell, Penn, Auburn, Berkeley, etc. Just make sure it’s a real MS.

Some grad students are “funded” - meaning they are TA’s or Research Assts in grad school and have grants for tuition. Other programs rely on tuition dollars. If it’s a super competitive program they may not be willing to overlook the issue; or maybe they would in a few years. But now is not the time to apply to something like that because he will have to explain. I’d probably wait until he gets the degree to apply, because otherwise he will be asked why he is off this semester.

No, I don’t think it will haunt him the rest of his life. Once he has the degree, it shouldn’t really matter. You should find out how this will (or won’t?) show on transcript. Hopefully will just show as a “W” withdraw this semester with no reason.

Does anyone know of any kids who got suspended from college and if they are doing fine and if so what did they do after suspension. We all are very scared and down at this point. Knowing some real life examples might show us a path forward and some hope. Or any advisors who have dealt with these kind of cases

@sunnyschool currently it shows as suspension on the transcript, not sure if that will stay there after he enrolls back. From what we understood it stays permanently

NO!

@jingle123 23 you may want to see if they are willing to list it as “withdraw” for this semester. Perhaps he can plead his “everybody does it” case…not sure if that will work or not…but he was singled out for discipline.

@sunnyschool he cant mention those other kids . His professor is a stickler and checks everything., thats why he got caught. But some professors are pretty slack. Process is over and these are their rules. His first mistake and he got caught and paying a hefty price for it.

I would be very very upset too but keep perspective that people do far worse, go to jail, and are still able to recover and have productive careers and lives. FWIW, I never had an employer ask for a transcript.

@jingle123 How do you know it’s his first mistake? He is a senior…my guess is it isn’t.
Nonetheless, don’t fret…he will recover and you will, in time, realize this lesson learned may be worthwhile.

@sunnyschool not defending him, or trying to cover up, because in this forum I dont have to and dont want to, since I want honest feedback. But I know him , he is always honest, and he is fine with a lousy grade if he didnt study, he wouldnt ask his classmates for questions from exams that they already took, saying its not fair to them. He hates it even if we say a white lie for any reason. He does other stupid things like drinking etc, sometime a bit too much, even that he tells us when he does that.

Agree a valuable lesson - but at what cost
