Hi.
Here’s some background info before I begin with questions,
I’ve been having some rough times after graduating from high school back in June 2010.
I had gone to a 4-year, in-state school, where I have flunked really bad due to the independence and freedom which were not available back in my high school years.
I took three semesters from the first 4-year college, got academic suspension and left the school.
I know I am clear of any obligations from the school besides from academics. (finances, etc).
I know that it’d be my best to contact the school to see if I am still in their 1-year suspension, which I do not think I am.
After leaving the 4-year university, I have started to go to a CC near my house starting from Spring of 2012.
I did not transfer any credits from the previous university to the CC (I am not sure if I did this correctly)
I still hadn’t come off of flunking and it took me almost 4 years to get done with 60 credits,
in which I was able to finish faster if I had chosen specifically which major to pursue. (and finally computer science)
I will have almost 80 credits from the CC by this fall, with a gpa of approximately 3.3,
of which I have retaken about 6classes (from the first two semesters).
I have shown progress at the CC. My initial grades in the first 3 semesters were awful, but I have caught up with the academics and have become somewhat ‘more’ responsible into school work and managed 3.5+ for the next semesters.
And my overall cumulative gpa by this fall will be around 3.2~3.3.
I cannot say I did well, but I’ve started to love the major classes, and I feel that this is what I should do.
So, I’m looking to transfer a 4-year university around my area. They accept students with 2.85+ gpa through a guaranteed admission program they provide with the students transferring from in-state. However I am not applicable due to previous suspension at another institution.
And here are my questions:
1) Is there any problem with not reporting to the first university that I’ll be taking classes from a CC, and not transferring
courses from the first university?
2) Should I be worried on how to handle the situation that I might be stuck in CC forever?
3) Has anyone been in any similar situations as me?
Thanks for reading!
Many CCs will allow students to take as many classes as they want to in non-degree status, so not getting your transcript to them at the beginning is not such a big deal. However, in order to be a full degree candidate there and to be able to graduate with your Associates Degree, you need to get your old transcript to them. Talk with the admissions office and your advisor and find out what steps you need to take to do that. They will be able to help you sort that out. Once you get that transcript sent to your CC, your status can be fixed and you can be a full degree candidate at your CC and complete an Associates Degree in something. Please do graduate with your Associates! You will be so happy to know that you have accomplished that, and it will make transfer to another college/university a lot easier.
You also need to speak with the people at your original university and find out if you are no longer considered suspended. It is possible that your success at your CC will mean that they can change your status in their records. If that happens it will make a lot of difference when you apply to transfer to the new 4-year institution.
Lots of students at your very own CC are in this exact same situation. The counselors and advisors at your CC are experts at helping students straighten out their records, finish their Associates Degrees, and move on.
Wishing you all the best!
I got to talk to my adviser at the CC and they told me to apply for spring, and if I do not get in (:<), reapply in the following semester due to less seats available for spring semester. Thanks for your reply! It’s really helpful!
Are you sure you are not eligible to transfer into this different 4 year university? Typically they expect you are in good standing at your most recent (current) university, which you are.
The thing for me is that I have suspension on record from any previous institution. I delved into the research and they said to send in all of the transcripts from any institution I’ve been attending.
So I do not qualify for guaranteed admission, which leaves me with only regular/competitive transfer…
Yes, you must submit all of your transcripts and make the case that the first university is ancient history and that your recent record will define your performance at the new 4-year school. It may be that you do not qualify for guaranteed admission but since your GPA is well above the minimum at the CC, you stand a good chance. More importantly, it is unlikely that you will be allowed to transfer much more than 60 credits form the CC.
