I have 1860 sat (700 math)
29 act (33 math, 32 science)
3.85 GPA W
4 APs
Tons of extracurriculars
Could I get in?
How about mentioning that it’s the University of Pittsburgh?
(I had to google it as “Swanson School of Engineering” is not exactly a household name).
Anyway. You are really too low on the math scores for a upper-tier STEM program. The usual assumption is an 800 math score or really close to it.
I think you have a good shot based on your standardized test scores, which are in the top 25% or higher compared to the 2015 entering class. Yes, the Engineering students will be on the high end of that range, but so are you. Your W GPA is a little low compared to the class profile but certainly your stats make it worth applying.
Sorry about that soze.
The thing is that in my STEM classes (AP chem, AP physics, AP calc, comp sci) I get A’s. I know people in my classes that scored in the 2200 and 2300s on the SATs but I beat them on every test in those classes. I wish that mattered more because I do well in actual classes.
What did you get on the actual AP exams in these AP science classes?
I took AP Chem last year and got 5 and those other APs (calc, physics, bio) I’m taking this year
Also what does anyone think about my chances at Virginia tech engineering and case western?
Again… I’m concerned about your low math score. You’re looking at upper-tier STEM programs and 800’s in math are pretty easy to come by. (My S sucks at math (he’s a journalism major) and even he managed to get an 800).
As a general rule of thumb I tell students that they should look for a minimum of 2100 with at least a 700 on each section to be competitive for most schools. For top-tier schools you should be looking at a 2200+. For STEM programs you should be hovering near the 800 range for math.
Well I wish I would have done better but for the record the people that score in the 2200s usually dont do as well as I do in actual classes. When the teachers give tests back they usually have a top 10 list and I am always on it. It’s frustrating to me that my math score isn’t higher but thats just the way it is.
So based on my low SAT scores, where should I be looking to go to school? I’m looking for urban, medium sized school.
Just a thought, why not take some subject tests? If you got a 5 on AP chem, you should do well on the Chemistry subject test, and if you do well in the Math L2 (don’t take L1 if you want to do something in STEM, its generally not taken seriously) test, that should make up for your low SAT 1 math score.
I could take the chemistry and math L2 tests in December. (i will be gone during the november test date). Is December too late? I was gonna try to apply early action for as many schools as I could to increase my chances. What kind of scores should I be looking for on those subject tests?
Also does anyone else have any schools in my range?
I think all the schools you mentioned are within shooting distance, it’s just that none are “matches” or “safety” schools.
Try and add some schools which are just a bit less competitive:
UConn
UMass,
Rutgers,
Syracuse,
BU,
NYU Poly,
Northeastern,
Temple,
RIT,
Okay thank you so much I’ll look into those schools.
Also what do you think my chances are for Dayton? I know its general admission is pretty easy but I’m assuming the engineering is harder. What about Lehigh engineering, could I get in?
