Application checklist is now gone in prep for decisions!
It’s getting real
@mutedmornings Yes, best 1 of 10 self-selected awesome applicants.
Well, just remember that where you go will not define who you are or even the kind of person you will be. Although the name of a college might add to the overall impression of a person’s character and their successes, there are also many other factors that will define the success of a young adult. Good luck to everyone and congratulations to the future Swarthmore class of 2022!
Thank you that made me feel a lot better
The login portal isn’t working for me now. Nervous. Nvm there it goes
@wolfy321 the same thing happened to me. I’m getting more and more nervous
I was accepted to Winter Early Decision.Below are my personal experience and thoughts.
Uncontrollable factors that got me in:
First-generation college student
My high school is “non-traditional” feeder high school
It is based on the post by interesteddad on College Confidential. Although it is not validated by Swarthmore, I personally believed in this policy because the admission officer did not visit any high schools in this area except mine. The admission officer eventually called my counselor to congratulate me for being the first one in my high school getting accepted (and also enrolled) to Swarthmore.
Low-income student
Controllable factors that got me in:
SAT and GPA
My SAT score is below average for those who apply to Swarthmore, around 25th percentile. My GPA is close to 4. In my opinion, top schools like Swarthmore can fit their entire class with applicants who have perfect or close to perfect SAT score and GPA if they want to.
Recommendation letters
All my teachers included the word “inquisitive” in their letters. It may seem normal but it displayed my “swattiness” to the admission officers. For example, one teacher said he has never met someone with my drive to learn for the purpose of learning. The topic I questioned was nowhere near the class was covering.
Interview
I did the on-campus interview. My interviewer was a sophomore. He was a nice guy and asked a lot of helpful question that cannot be found in a college application. I asked plenty of question which cannot be found on the Internet. The interview lasted for almost two hours.
“Why Swarthmore?” essay
I could not remember how many times I saw someone stated the importance of this part. I spent almost five days to complete this essay. It was not easy to demonstrate interest in 250 words. I basically explained why am I excited about the Honors Program.
That’s not real helpful now if we already applied lol
Haha. What am I trying to explain is getting accepted to college is just a crapshoot. Think about it, Obama got rejected by Swarthmore. Hope this somehow released your stress.
Obama? Wow. Thanks I know you’re just trying to help lol
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!
t-minus one hour!!!
Hahaha @Zackkk Thanks for sharing the story! I looked it up and as far as I can tell, I think it’s true!
