Swarthmore v. UCLA

I know that this is a weird combination to compare, but I have narrowed my choices to these 2. Can you guys help me compare them in an ways because Im kind of lost. Like LAC v. State.

Thank you

You've got to be kidding. This is like saying you've narrowed down your lunch choice to a bowl of lentils or a Mars bar and now you really want help deciding between the two. I just don't see what kind of input you're looking for on this one.

If I were you, I'd pick the LAC for undergrad...

If money is an issue, I also had to choose between UCLA w/ regents and Swarthmore (although there were other schools that ended up being more appealing than UCLA)... and chose swat with lots of loans, and have never regretted it for a minute. Have you visited both campuses?

Don't worry about not having made a decision between these two - only people eyebrow deep in college admissions could fail to understand that not every high school senior has been planning out which college to go to since they started kindergarten.

As for the differences, Swat's a lot smaller (obviously) which means you'll meet most people on campus during your four years. Some people think that's good, some don't. The classes are a lot smaller than classes at a big state school. Also, Swat has no graduate program, so professors are all yours - you are their most important student. The smallness affects extra-curicullars. There are more opportunities to take leadership roles in clubs, theater, music, sports, etc. In fact, you will be actively encouraged to take part in running campus.

I've visited UCLA for a fencing tournament and found it a beautiful, pleasant place to be. Unlike USC, which is in a really bad part of LA, UCLA is in a pretty nice neighborhood. Swat, in contrast, is in the northeast - so colder and more east coast. (I'm from Miami, so I find the weather here pretty bleak - my friends from the north and midwest like the Swat weather fine)

I think mostly the types of people at UCLA and Swat are very different. UCLA probably more laid back. Swat probably more interested in intense academics.

Good luck choosing. Hope these few comments help.

thanks,
I applied to schools that people recommended to me because im pretty much got into these 2 great schools and Im kind of lost.

Is there a huge difference in price for you? What are you interested in studying?
