I was accepted as a transfer to both these schools. I'm interested in going to grad school for ecology/behavior. I am quirky, but social, and since I just spent a year at an all-women's college (hehe) I want some reasonably attractive, social guys. I am willing to work to learn. I want a college with intellectual and cultural/socioeconomic diversity. I was wondering if anyone could comment on these aspects.

for what youre interested in, i think that the difference in quality between the two schools is so small that its almost meaningless. both swarthmore and uchicago are known for their intellectual breadth; youll probably find greater socioeconomic diversity at chicago, and probably greater cultural diversity at swarthmore.

im a guy, and ive been noticing that so many people a concerned with the attractiveness of the opposite sex. i dont know. my opinion is that a) it really doesnt matter much, and b) there are definitely good looking, mediocre, and ugly people everywhere, and to decide on a school even lightly based on the hotness of the student body is a mistake just because there are so many other things that go into a college experience. now that that's done, the guys at swarthmore are likely to be a bit hotter.

I personally, would go to U of Chicago b/c I would like more of a research oriented university rather than a small liberal arts. They both offer an awesome education. So, good luck!

ecape: "I was accepted as a transfer to both these schools. I'm interested in going to grad school for ecology/behavior."

You probably know this, but: UChicago's "ecology, evolution, and behavior" department was ranked #1 in the nation by more than one list. Also, Chicago has 13,000 people; Swat has 1400. In other words, the chances that you will find hot people at Chicago are a lot higher. Also, I assume that there exist in the city of Chicago a few fairly attractive individuals.

well, more than half of those 13000 are grad schoolers (not to say that chicago doesnt cater to undergrad, quite the opposite) so despite its international prowess and research, it is much closer to LACs than its similar institutions (check out chicago's class sizes and faculty:student ratios).

Thanks for the input. So you guys think even though Swarthmore is considerably harder to get into, academics are comparable at both as are chances of getting into the best grad schools?

I think that getting into Chicago is harder than getting into Swarthmore. Chicago realllllly takes painstaking efforts to find people who really belong there, and the admissions process is tough. Do not let that high acceptance rate fool you by any means. The pool is sooo self-selecting, it's incredible. If I had to bet, I would think that at least 75 percent of the kids applying there have above a 1300-1350 on their SATs.

As far as grad schools, if you do well at Swarthmore or the University of Chicago, you should have the same chance of getting into the best grad schools.

I am transferring from Kenyon College. My reasons for transferring are the widespread drinking culture, the lack of intense intellectualism, and the lack of quirky, artistic students. I am looking for an intellectual climate in which students are academically engaged, quirky, active, and artistic. I am especially looking for a top-notch English program, which is the reason I went to Kenyon in the first place, but was turned off by the lack of intellecual engagement. I have heard a lot about Swarthmore on many posts, and did apply there, but have been wait-listed. I was accepted into Oberlin, Grinnell (which offered me a renewable $10,000 per year scholarship), Wesleyan, the University of Chicago, and Brown University. Brown and the University of Chicago want an answer today, which is why I am panicked. I have not yet received an admissions decision from Haverford, and was wait-listed (though was accepted there as a senior) at Carleton. Can those of you are quite well-informed about these schools, the difference between liberal arts schools and the universities, etc. help me out? I have waited till the last minute simply because the whole transfer process has stressed me out a great deal. I am concerned that the Fiske Guide did not list English as one of Brown's best programs, as I was initially quite excited by Brown. I have also been advised not to attend a university, but attend a selective liberal arts school like Swarthmore or Haverford instead. If you can respond soon, I would greatly appreciate it. As I have not visited most of these schools due to being a transfer, any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

i think youd be a bit smothered at the uoc just since its too much intellectualism and not enough of the quirky, artistic students. i live right next to brown, and i can tell you that there are plenty of those types there, plus you have the reat english program. dont be dissuaded by the guidebook, browns english program is top notch. if i didnt guage the importance of quirky aritist types versus the intellectual atmosphere, choose the uoc since it certainly has the better intellectual environment and more serious learning across the board. browns students are hard working and intellectual, dont get me wrong, but there is also a climate for people who dont care much and drink to excess.

If you are "reasonably attractive," you won't have any problems attracting reasonably attractive men at either school. At both Swat and UCha hot chicks and dudes are in a very small minority, but any and all reasonably attractive women are given a whole lot of attention at Chicago, and they have their choice of the men. I don't know about this at Swat, but I imagine it's similar.
