UNH is my top pick. I applied early action on 11/15/2016 and am still waiting to hear. My friend with a very high GPA and a good score on the new SAT, and a sport, as an extra curricular was accepted within a few weeks of submitting her application 11/13/2016. I have a 3.59 GPA, a sport, an upcoming health care internship and some community outreach efforts such as a coat drive and a food drive and tutoring as extracurriculars, but my best SAT score on the new SAT is only 1010. I have taken it three times and haven’t done better than that. I am so worried UNH won’t admit me. Anyone know from recent experience what my chances are? Also, I heard the Admissions office is closed this week for the holidays. Is that correct?
I got in with a 3.3/3.7 and strong test scores/EC’s. Your SAT might be a little low but it is not like UNH is overly competitive. You have a shot but it is prob a low reach…
jackoneill - by low reach do you mean I probably won’t get in?
@waitingkillsme Not at all, it is probably equally as likely if accepted/rejected. Best of luck, and this is only a meaningless chance, take what I say with a grain of salt.
Jackoniell - thanks!
My daughter applied on 10/25 (early action) with an 1140 on the new SAT. 3.45 GPA…still hasn’t heard back. Sport, coaches youth cheering, camp counselor, works…tons of community service…top choice. Frustrating. Good luck.
My S got in with stats (test scores and gpa) just a little higher, sports, community service etc. @NorthofBoston26 @waitingkillsme so not to worry! Also, my S’s friend who had SATs in the 1200s and GPA 4.2 with tons of APs from private competitive school also applied at same time as my son in November and he too still hasn’t heard (and you would expect that he would have heard first, right?) which leads me to believe I don’t think it’s a negative thing, just how they are getting through the apps at this point. My understanding is that they received a huge amount of EA apps this year! Good luck and hopefully, they will be Wildcats next year!!
Thank you!
D was deferred…got the letter today. Good luck to all!
Oh, no! Is UNH her first choice? Mind if I ask her GPA, SAT stat and activities?
Just noticed you already posted this info:

I don’t understand why they would defer her. My daughter talked to someone at school today who was accepted with approx. 200 lower points on SAT than your daughter and about a 3.2 GPA. Did they update the portal before you got the letter?? What does the letter say deferral means?
@NorthofBoston26 so sorry to hear - I truly am. As parents it seems like we go through this process with them. In fact, we may even take it harder than them! My S applied to a reach school and it is a little torturous waiting to hear from them. Decisions are supposed to come out in January and although we remain hopeful, if there is any luck in his world, we are not overly optimistic. I’m dreading the decision. As for UNH - if it is still your daughter’s first choice, I would suggest having her guidance counselor call admissions and really impress that upon them before she “moves on”? As far as I’m concerned, it’s worth every shot before moving forward in another direction since that is always an option? In any event, best of luck to your daughter! I’m sure she will find the best fit and have a great experience wherever she chooses!!!
Thanks everyone! It was her first choice. I will share the advice to have her guidance counselor inquire. She in fact told her that UNH was the perfect school for her. Her “reach” school was University of South Carolina where she had a 50/50 chance. Deferred there too. With UNH, her chances were much higher…But she was accepted to 11 other schools so hopefully she’ll feel better in a couple of days
It just said they are waiting to make a decision during the regular decision application pool. Very simple simple and curt.
Her activities: camp counselor (4 years, summer residential and day), youth cheering coach (100 hours of volunteer hours), competitive cheering, DECA Marketing Marketing Team, Relay for Life (4 years-2 years captain), after school nanny, freshman activity club moderator (senior year only)…lots of other volunteer activities but those are her major activities
@NorthofBoston26 she sounds like a perfect fit for UNH! Great activities, lot’s of spirit and energy. I’m sure she will get in regular decision. My thoughts are that they were simply overwhelmed with EA apps this year. My friend called me today and she is getting anxious too because her S hasn’t heard and he applied EA with a 4.2GPA and SATs in the 1200s and community service etc. We really thought he would have heard already and we believe it is his first choice school too. Hopefully, we all look back at this and laugh when they are all there cheering on the Wildcats!
wow…your daughter has it all… very surprised UNH deferred her…too bad she will have already moved on by the time UNH no doubt accepts her. …so glad she has so many other choices. The waiting is still killing us especially now knowing they are deferring such great students. Its so sad that many of the accepted kids are just seeing where they can get in and how much money they can get and really aren’t that interested in UNH and good students whose first choice it is get deferred. There has to be a better way! Thanks for sharing your daughter’s info with us. Please let us know where she finally chooses.
@xaviermom2017 Thank you so much for the kind and encouraging words! I see a lot of anxious and down faces in my classroom too as I teach seniors. I always say the same things to them. Enjoy your weekend
@waitingkillsme please let us know when you hear. UNH is a top choice for my son. He was recently deferred to RD. They are requesting his mid term grades. His gpa is around a 3.2, best done on SAT was 1020, 2 sports, ton of community service, a few honors classes, descent essay. I think I’m more disappointed than he is. He is fully prepared to attend one of his other top choices so we’ve gone ahead and scheduled visits for accepted students in Feb and the end of March. I’m hoping a UNH final decision comes by 4/1 when I’d like him to make his pick.
@NorthofBoston26 I’m sorry for your daughter, she certainly sounds like a perfect fit! This is such a frustrating and stressful process!
will do…the waiting is very stressful.
