Swede looking for a year in the US

Hi there!

My name is William and I’m from Sweden! I’m currently on my first year studying engineering, at Linköping University (anyone?!), and I’ve been planning to be in the US on my third. Since it is freezing cold during winter season in Sweden I’ve been mostly looking for southern states, but only on the coast such as Florida, Georgia, S/N Carolina and California.

During my third year I think my technical field will be mechanical engineering so I need help from you americans to give me suggestions on schools that aren’t so international famous, such as Stanford and so on.

Cheers!

First, you need to ask your home university whether they have any exchange programs in the US: no reason to look for universities if your own school won’t give you credit.

Also, how close do you want to be to the coast? In California, for example, there are many engineering programs at schools far enough from the coast that you would need a car to get to the beach.

Here’s a few to consider: Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo; University of California, Santa Barbara; University of San Diego – all of these are close to the beach.

Here’s a list of all schools, listed by states, that offer engineering

Yea already asked about exchange programs but my school only have a partnership with Stanford and Morgantown(?). And about the credits they just required courses that are similar and the american credits should be alike the Swedish HP.

I will also provide for the tuition fee for myself which is why I prefer for maximum 25.000 USD for the year.
Any ideas on the east coast?

Thanks for the list!

Hmmm… 25,000 for the year may not be enough… for an international student, the cost of tuition and room and board will be closer to $50,000

That’s odd, the smaller institutes I’ve found only want around 20.000. Maybe the larger universities want more?
But are your number for 1 year and what does that amount usually include?

You need to look for Cost of Attendance – estimates which include your tuition (usually in the $20,000/year range) room, board, books, etc. When you’re looking at public universities, you need to look at “Non-Resident” or “Out of State” costs, they’re often twice the cost of local state residents’s costs.

So for example, San Louis Obispo, a relatively inexpensive state school, will cost you $24,684 plus another $9,000 or so in out of state fees. (Plus your airfare, etc.) That’s 2014/2015 costs – they rise all the time. Many universities, and all private schools, will be more.

Oh, I guess I’ll just have to spend more money! But thanks for the list, really helpful!

Why not participate in your university’s exchange with Stanford?
It’s ideally located
Colleges “on the beach” where it’s sunny and swimmable would include CNU, ODU, UNC Wilmington, Coastal Carolina, FIU, Eckerd, Rollins, Flagler, NovaSoutheastern… None of these is as good as Stanford.

I’m not that kind of student, kinda lazy which would make several students get in before me.
But what I’ve been aiming for is Georgia Tech, but I know it is kinda difficult as well, but I could really use some help finding some ‘cheaper’ colleges on the east coast, preferably on the southern, could also be no coast!

Georgia Tech is not for the lazy, even the kinda lazy… expect to spend way more time studying (and having classmates who spend way more time) studying/doing research, than partying. Its workloads are known to be brutal.
You have a list in #8.

That’s what I thought, but I’m gonna be reading 100% extra the next 5 terms before studying abroad, which probably will force me to spend waaay for time studying that having fun.

That list only include schools in California.

Can you give us all the schools on your university’s list that are affordable for you?

You mean the schools that my university have a partnership with? Only Stanford and West Virginia university,

Actually the cost is not an issue, it’s just that I don’t wanna spend too much of my parents money…
My own savings are about 60.000 USD, and I don’t plan to spend it all on just 1 year of study in the US.

Well, if you want a party school, West Virginia University ranks near the top.

Otherwise, the universities listed in number8 should help you locate schools of interest or eliminate others, or give us details… There are 3,700 universities in the US, so we need a bit more information.
